What I understand is that all approx 240 terrorist detainees will either be moved to the mainland for trial OR if there is no legal case against them (enemy combatants, etc.) they will be sent back to their home country (or some other country that will accept them). Basically it will end the legal limbo they’ve been in.
What I also understand is that Gitmo itself is not closing, it’s merely the holding prison for these people.
The military tribunals have had 6 years available to resolve all these issues, and nothing has happened. Therefore, I guess I don’t understand what all the fuzz is about.

True. We are not giving the base back to Castro. Merely closing the prison facility.
Basically it will end the legal limbo they’ve been in.
Unlikely. There are currently 67 detainees that the Bush Administration has determined do not belong. For more than a year it has been trying to get somebody, anybody to take them. No volunteers. Including the US. Maybe some of that good will of the new administration will find them a home.
**The military tribunals have had 6 years available to resolve all these issues, and nothing has happened. **
Not really true. The concept of military tribunals has been debated and tested for most of that time.
Their own words are evidence. I have a friend who worked there “interviewing” these folks at Gitmo. While he would not talk about much that went on, he make it very clear that many of the folks there were very clear about who they were and what they did and what they would do if given a chance. They are very proud of what they have done and can’t wait to get the chance to do it some more. These are not just some guys herding goats when they were kidnaped by Bush.
All of them? They’ve gone to trial and have been proven guilty?
With all due respect to you and the work your friend is doing/did, “I have a friend…who said they said…” is not the evidence I was referring to.
AND…“interviewing.” Another issue in and of itself.
Check out Taxi to the Dark Side. See what kind of interviewing is going on first hand.
"All of them? They’ve gone to trial and have been proven guilty? "
I guess my point was that when they go to trial their own words would be used as evidence. When a person says I did it and I would do it to you if you give me the chance I would feel Ok saying that person is guilty. I am sure there is someone there who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got picked up. But from what I have heard, anyone who they were not totally sure of was let go. It seems to me they erred on the side of caution and many of the folks let go went right back to doing what they were in gitmo for.
I will google to taxi to the dark side for a look.
Just to let you know…in NO WAY am I saying your friend was doing the kinds of things you might see in Taxi to the Dark Side (a movie). It is extreme. But it’s documentary footage of Gitmo and Abu Ghraib, not something made up.
This article is all I’m saying: http://www.edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/americas/01/22/gitmo.pakistan.lawsuit/index.html
These prisoners weren’t given trials. They were tortured. How can we trust what they said in that shit hole? Let them get out in a court and say they’re guilty, then put them in prison.
That’s how we’re supposed to do things, right? Just and civilized??? It’s not news, it’s just how Obama wants to run things. As he should.
No problems. I am an open minded person who likes to look at things from all sides. I generally like to think of the folks in the government as people like me who have good intentions.
I read the article. I would like to know who arrested him in Indonesia and how he ended up in a US hands. It’s not like the FBI can walk around Indonesia flashing a badge and picking folks up. Something does not add up.
