Hi all,
I have finished 15 IM’s and have all of these finisher medals, pixs, etc., etc. I am not a scrap-booker (maybe I should try it and I would like it…probably not…). Everything is stashed in a box in the basement. Any suggestions for what to do with this stuff? I am not into memories except when it comes to my race stuff! I was thinking of taking the medals to a frame shop and talking with someone about how to display them in a picture frame. I am training for my 16th IM…maybe I should wait…?!
can’t remember where i read about it but there’s an org in the southeast that collects medals and uses them as part of therapy for children recovering from serious illness. i boxed mine up and sent last year, and will do so again when i get enough of them.

maybe somebody will come up with the org name…
Now that is pretty cool! Kudos to you!
with a small fraction of my annual prize money, i set up a viewing room in a bedroom in our house. i enclose all the first place trophies in a LED backlight glass enclosure and throw away all 2nd place or worse finishes.
I do custom picture framing and have done many running and triathlon finishers medals. Not to long ago I did a frame project for a customer who had 30 marathon finish medals.I did a nice triple mat with 30 openings , 3 rows of ten.
For you, you could do a frame for the 16 and leave a blank space for #16 then just mount in that one when you finish.
PM for questions(layout,mat colors,frames ,prices)

That is great, I’ve been collecting all these medals that don’t really mean much to me just because I don’t want to throw them away. Now I know what to do.
Thanks
I made a shadowbox of Joe’s Kona medals a few years back. You can find shadowbox frames at most craft stores.
We have an Ironman wall in the living room. It has some nice framed IM posters, the medals and a shelf with the Kona trophies. There is some memorabilia scattered around the room.
With other race medals we have sort of a game. He brings them home and hangs them somewhere odd around the house. When I find it, I put it in a box in storage in the Joe Bonness Memorial Library with the 100s of other medals, etc. Did I mention Joe never throws anything away?
I can’t imagine how many medals Joe has collected. If he hasn’t thrown any away is there even room for the two of you?
BTW, one of my favorite triathlon memories is the awards dinner at Lake Placid in 2004. I had just finished my first IM and was pretty impressed with myself. I got a good seat near the stage, 3 ladies came and sat with me and made a fuss about me doing my first, they had done a bunch. They invited you and Joe to sit with us, they had saved a couple of spots. While Joe was signing autographs they explained who he was. I started to realize I was sitting a little out of my league, I knew for sure I was when they started giving out the age group awards and I wound up being the only competitor still sitting at the table. Joe and all those ladies had won their age groups. I on the other hand was 134th in mine.
You mean to tell me you don’t wear them to work. I thought medals were the new neck tie.
Some years ago at Disney (Goofy) some women were at the airport wearing their medals, four days later - they did the half. I guess what ever floats folks boats.
when a noted bike racer(john sinabaldi)in the tampa bay area died several years ago his family gave out many of his medals at the post funeral party. Great way to remember him.
