What do we really need?

Trying to put a list together of needs for the country rather then wants:

Food, jobs, clean air and water, education, defense, emergency services(police, fire) and medical care. Agree or disagree?

You forgot swift kick in the ass.

Are you talking about things that the country needs from the Federal Government? If so, then it is just national defense. Everything else should be local or personal.

Common sense, accountability, responsibility

Under this model, I believe that my .16 acre jurisdiction will have excellent air quality but crappy roads.

I’d hate to live in your country. Localized tyranny of the majority. You’d have slaves in the south, state religion in Utah, and who knows what else. You give the federal too little credit.

As opposed to national tyranny of the majority?

Where are you from?

Larger sample sets tend toward normality. Central Limit Theorem.

So why concentrate so much power (budget) in the hands of what, 500 people (Pres, congress, senate)?

Well, uh, NC.

500 representatives of a diverse constituency. Someone has to make the decisions. People didn’t like a lot of the ones we had so we got a bunch of new ones. If they don’t like these we will get a new crop.

edited:cause I suck at boards.

But you still have 500 people doleing out $3 trillion a year, that’s a lot of power.

Also, if you want to try to get a (big) piece of that, you only need to influence 500 people.

Now, if the Federal budget was only (ha ha) $1 trillion, and the other $2 trillion was left at the state and/or local level, Haliburton et al, would have to influence a lot more people.

Like you said, we are a diverse country, why have 51% (or really 51% of the 60% who vote) decide what we all do?

It’s refreshing to hear some sanity for once. People tend to forget that a power vacuum will never last, and that we are much better off electing people who at least have a mandate of protecting our freedom rather than leave it to organized gansters, corporations, whatever…

The government of elected representatives must be the most powerful entity in the land… or we are really screwed. In fact I believe that our governmental power has already been largely usurped… which is how we got in our current mess.

I disagree to a point. National defense is certainly in there. But I think that the Feds have a duty to build/maintain interstate infrastructure. I still believe there is a need for some sort of a national postal service.

Fewer octomoms. Stimulus programs that add value to the economy instead of give aways.

I’d think a country solely worried about defending itself probably doesn’t have much worth protecting.

You are right…that is why world domination should be high on our list. Starting with invading Canada, and destroying thier idiotic metric system.
