What do pros have in their fuel belt

… during an Ironman - anyone know?

liquid whoop-ass

They get paid to wear one. No sane person would add more weight onto themselves for a run when there are aid station buffets every mile

and they get paid to drink from the flasks too?!

3 bottles of Starbucks mocha frappuccino, 3 tablets of Kona Cola flavored nuun and water to top off in my 1.5-liter Camelbak.

ok it’s not a fuel belt.

and no Camelbak and Starbucks don’t sponsor me, I wish

Do you think the added weight of the fuel belt out-weighs the advantage of having your own nutrition in an IM? Not trying to be an ST smart a$$, I really am wondering.

A concentrated blend of BACON and WHOOPASS. Well, that’s what Rappstar would run anyway.

Ya gotta wear a # belt anyway, why not have a small supply of what you like with you too?
IF I were sponsored, I’d have no problem running w/ a FuelBelt or similar.

For IM (and even HIM) I like to have my own small flask of water, and at least 1 gel.
That way, if I really feel the need for something, I can have it whenever I feel like, not when there’s an aid station.
(I’m not a Pro, nor am I sponsored by anybody)

Yeah, Chris McCormack is clueless and doesn’t know what he is doing. Same with Lisa Bentley.

Disagree. Yes there are obvious weight penalties for carrying a fuel belt but the benefits:

  1. Drink on the run more quickly
  2. Monitor fluid intake
  3. Fluids of choice
  4. Less air or stomach issues drinking out of small bottles versus cups
  5. Can take a drink when ever you decide

outweigh the weight penalty.

Regarding what the pro’s drink I think its very individualistic to the pro.

Peace,
RF

My guess would be that they’re primarily drinking whatever the aid station has. It’s easier to pour into the bottle and drink from there then drink from the cup at speed.

I realize it is individualistic to the pro - but does anybody know of a particular pro and what he/she uses during an IM run? Curious to see whether there are any commonalities. So many top/consistent IM performers run w/ a belt - especially in Kona. Or is the subject top secret?

The answers to these questions will be posted on Xtri in the next few days. We asked Fuel Belt pro’s the same question and the answers are very interesting. For those who think they get paid to wear them, well, that’s just dumb. At the level they compete at, if it doesn’t give them an advantage, they simply wouldn’t use it… and in all cases, they were using it before we even connected.

Here’s the article that I mentioned last night on what some of the top pro’s put in their Fuel Belts:

Vinu, Nice article in Tri. I’m impressed with your successes and ingenuity. Very nice products, and I can’t wait to see the new versions.

Thank you Vinu and Betsy at Xtri! You guys rock! Nice to get direct responses from the pros and interesting to see what works for them.
