Having done triathlons for 21 years and been a race director for 14 years, I’ll tell what the typical triathlon type is. They tend to be anal-retentive bordering on obsessive-compulsive. They love to have the best toys (nothing like seeing a man finishing a Olympic distance tri in 5 hours riding a Cervelo P3). They analyze and structure their workouts, food intake, sex life, social time and their possible chance of qualifying for Kona. For many triathlons become a way of life.
Me…I am the anti-typical. I love beer and my workouts are about as structured as Jello on a stick. I also believe there are as many tri-geeks like me as their are the “typical” tri type.
Have fun, and if you ever do an Ironman, the last 200 meters is worth the first 142 miles.
In the old days Triathletes were like a secret cult.
When you were asked what sport you were participating in, the answer often was: Oh, that is the thing with XC-skiers and a gun, isn’t it?
Nowadays you get the answer: How did you do in THE IRONMAN?
It is that the masses have been educated (by the industry who sells equipment more than by the athletes) and now Marketing has discovered “Triathlon” as another vehicle to sell all kinds of things from chemicals to automobiles. Oh yeah, you are automatically considered to be superhuman (at least that is what the commercials tell you).

He said “triathlon HYPE”… not TYPE
(what’s up with the forum not posting everything you type… I had to re-type my post twice?)
