What Do Mavic Open Pros w/ DA hubs Weigh?

Anyone have any idea on the weight of this wheelset? I am strating to put parts together to build an R3. I know the Open Pro is a pretty unanimous choice for bombproof training wheels and Performance has them on sale for $300 with DA hubs. That said, it is an R3 so I would like not to put super heavy wheels on it.

I doubt I will be buying race wheels for this bike soon, if ever, so I’d like my training wheels to be relatively light, even if that meant slightly less bombproof. I have found the Shimano R560s which weight about 1800g for the pair in the same price range for comparison. Thanks.

I don’t know how reliable it is, but the Excel Sports site’s “Build a set of wheels” feature shows weights for whatever wheelset you want to build.

If you want some very light, relatively strong wheels worthy of an R3 have Excel build you a set using DT 240 hubs, DT Light Weight Aero spokes, and DT 1.1 rims - 28 spoke. Less than 1500 grams, less than $800. (Or close, last time I checked :))

Depending on how many spokes you use and what type, a wheel set with DA hubs and Open pros will be around 1900-2000g.

Personally, I would get the DA/open pros over the 560s as they are more easily serviced, and use readily available spokes should you break one.

Also check to see if that R560 weight includes skewers. The weight I stated for the DA/OP is with skewers.

Quadzilla got me curious. Difficult to see, but here goes…

and conversely…

so I guess it just really depends on the build…

Ditto on the excel wheelbuilder. I built a set of 28 hole open pros, with Record hubs and DT REvolution spokes. $450 and they weigh in about 1550 grams. These are now my actual road race wheels. Look really classy (I got the black Open Pro rims) to boot.

Durace hubs are fricken expensive! Glad I got my wheels last year before the dollar really started to tank. Campy prices are getting out of control too.

the King rear hub is like $333! How do you justify that? And is it really better?

I remeber seeing your bike posted. A custom steel Serotta, wasn’t it…? That’s a dream for me, custom steel with Record, most likely with your same wheelset…

Only the hubs and crank (got it on sale) are Record. A man’s still gotta eat, so the rest is Chorus. I don’t think full Record is something meant for mere mortals.

record is actually unnecessary, i am currently working on a project to pull vacuum on the inside of my frame tubing. you know, just to shave those extra µg’s…

Just fill it with helium, it is lighter than air. Would the buoyancy of the helium offset the additional weight as compared to vacuum. I guess it probably would depend on what the atmosphere you are riding through is made of. I hate when I can’t sleep.

nothing does weigh slightly less than helium, yes, but perhaps you could play with your center of gravity that way… hmmmmm…

but what if we went through pre-breathing with helium for an hour before the swim start…? now that i am sure could work…
