From what I can make out (my German isn’t so good anymore), Faris has always been a triathlete. He won Lanzarote when he was 19. Interestingly enough, his goals include the Olympics. I wonder if he’s going to shift to short-course now that he has won IM WCs. Seems like a tough road to hoe.

McCormack, Chris - qualified economist/accountant. runner. Welchy got him into triathlon.

cam brown was into tris from a young age i think. faris was an ex swimmer and i think he went something like 3.00 in a marathon as a 16 yr old?

Not sure about Michellie, but has been a triathlete for a very long time. My brother managed a triathlon team for a while that had Michellie, Shawn Welch, Mari Holden, and a few others who have really succeeded. As we look back, the team was pretty amazing.

I heard an interview with Reid where he said that he basically thought of himself as a roadie who does triathlons. He said that as a youngster he wanted to be a pro cyclist, but realized that wasn’t going to happen and so switched to tri. Interesting stuff.

I’d be interested to learn if there are any other “Gordo-like” stories out there. You know, someone who came to competition at a late age and succeeded, without being something silly like a national caliber swimmer, or a junior cross-country champion, etc, etc.

Faris has never raced Lanzarote, so I doubt he’s ever won it
maybe he won the short distance duathlon early in the year.

hey francois

faris raced at Lanzarote many years ago at age 17. it was is first ever ironman and finish in 9:50…10 years ago…

I meant as a pro…sorry
.

Tough row to hoe.

“Tough row to hoe.”

hey, thanks. I was pretty sure I was wrong, but was too lazy to look it up…my apologies.

And on Faris’ CV, it says he raced Lanzarote when he was 18. I know that much for sure. And for Faris, that wasn’t so long ago.

BLASPHEMER! Karen Smyers went to PRINCETON, where, yes, she did swim. She ran some too there.

Everytime I look at the top10 male in Kona I think of the same:

PONTANO WHO?!?!?!

oops she is going to kill me if she knew I posted that…
