Specifically what makes bike a cyclo-cross bike?
What are the components that differential it from a road bike?

Most road bikes don’t have sufficient clearance to handle the fat cyclocross tires.
About the only thing I can think of is the brakes. Cross bikes will have side pull (I hope that is the correct term). This is to allow for mud to clear easier. Also of course different tires. Some people will also install a second set of brake levers.
tire clearance, brakes and higher bottom bracket. Seems like a cross bike fits a bit different due to higher bb (standover) and also in some cases slacker head tube angle. Check our Cannondale’s site and compare a CAD8 v their cross bikes. With some other brands the seat tube angles are also different.
Puke on the top tube, dirt on the down tube.
old crusty components that barely work, wheels that barely spin, and crazy machined aluminum cantilever brakes from 1992.

You’d be amazed how wrong you are and how high-tech they can be.
apparently you haven’t seen my cyclo-cross bike. and most other people’s cyclocross bikes.

I haven’t seen your, but like in any kind of racing there’s beaters and porn bikes. Plenty of porn bikes in cross.
UCI still being dicks about disk brakes?
nah, there’s a few really nice cross bikes, but they are rarely raced. why would you race a 3k merlin ti cross frame? that’s just nuts. gullicson has a ti redline, but he’s a pro.
bike porn in comparison to most cross bikes? yes. bike porn in comparison to road bikes? no way.

You must not cross much. I’m also guessing you probably don’t know what a Ridley or Empella is. Take a look at these:

Someone told me they reversed that ruling, but as far as I know yeah… and in my opinion a ridiculous rule (if you’ve ever ridden disc brakes in the mud you’ll know how much better they are).
Don’t forget about ALAN!
These are some of the best built, best handling cyclocross bikes on the market.
Disc brakes are not necessary for cross. First, they are too heavy…second, you don’t need brakes that can stop you on a dime. A high profile cantilever (Spooky, Paul, or Frogglegs) work the best in all conditions. Remember, you also have to pick up and carry your bike at times, so every gram counts!
those were included in ‘the few.’ also included were pinarello and colnago.
watching cross is different from participating. pros are different from regular people.
I watched page win nats last year on a cervelo, and I would not classify that bike as porn. just an ugly ass gray bike with white cervelo writing.
right now I dont care what one looks like, I just want one! Waiting to try out a Redline and also a Cannondale, latter is definitely prettier!

Sorry… wrong on all counts… disc brakes can easily be lighter than cantilever (i.e. Magura Marta, Avid Juicy among others), modulate better, and work best in all conditions.

Yes… and it’s obvious that I cross and you watch.
