What causes delay in messages?

yesterday I sent a text to my girlfriend at about noon. She got home a few hours later and said she didn’t get it. About 9:00 we were sitting on the couch and ding, new message finally delivered. Is it Verizon’s fault or the nsa? It was an innocuous picture of the giant mess her daughter made with green beans, it can’t be that interesting to anyone else. Why does that happen sometimes? Algorithm gone haywire?

Multiple reasons. Usually a temporary loss in service that then delays the send and/or receive: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/advice/11217122/Why-do-text-messages-get-delayed.html

Lots of people were sending messages to your GF at noon yesterday. She’s, umm, popular.

It’s good question. The slower arriving messages that I get are always from iphones. And then I’ll get the exact same message a few minutes later. Just from iphones.
