What career/job do you have

…and how well suited is it to having training time and still making enough money?

Cardiac RN.

Work 3 days a week. Off 4 days.

You’d think I would have plenty of training time… but…

The 3 days I work, I barely have time for a 30 minute run at 5am. And the 4 days off… couch aerobics seem to suck up all the daylight.

Unless you count calories from chest compressions?

Firefighter. They pay me to workout. A fit firefighter is a good firefighter. Need to be ready! Along with my wifes job it is enough to get by in NJ . I did hold at least one other part tie job for the last 20 years at all times.

College student. Training time is great but I don’t get paid much

I thought firefighters always had a second trade/job to supplement on their days off. Certainly that is the case over here, mostly chippies, tilers, most building trades.

I do a software consulting work - own a small company that does the same. Most times I work from home, so that’s great for training. Sometimes I work on site at client jobs, though they are local, so it’s like any regular desk job, so training is squished in where it can (morning swim before work, run at lunch, trainer at night), occasionally I have to travel to clients out of state… that’s when it suffers. I bring my running shoes, but that’s about all I do. And it’s tough because you work more so you can go home, and you are forced to eat out which sucks up time and nutrition.

CPA at one of the largest accounting firms in the world. Weekends are key, but if you are flexible, most weeks you can get in 3 or 4 shorter sessions during the week. 32 days vacation also helps.

Thought I would take some time off for myself the next couple years. I have always had two jobs since I was 12. And b4 anyone makes any smart remarks from 12 to 15 I worked as a paperboy and for my father. Sometimes at my uncles concession stands too but usually ended up eating, skating and skiing more then working when i was there. I worked for the last 20 years with auctioneer part time. Which turned into 3 jobs in itself. I started cleaning out estates, buying antiques selling them at shows and then on ebay in the last few years. Made a few good deals which afforded me to take the last three years off from the second job. Getting tough now though. Might have to start working a second job again soon.

College Professor. Can’t think of a better job. This year - May 15 to September 8 off, and when at work my schedule is flexible enough to find enough time during the day to train. What $ I don’t make, I save in the fact that parking is $10 year, I have a free gym with every piece of equipment I could ever want/need, a free personal trainer, and a free pool.

Plus, having spring break the rest of my life is a pretty good thing too, only 5 more days until that happens…

I am an actuary. I work a decent amount of hours and have exams to study for on top of that. I suppose the pay is okay. I’ve been told actuaries get paid well…hmmm. It is hard to balance training with work, commuting, household stuff, and rest.

Sales Management, fufilling career in a lot of ways, having extra time to train is not one of them as it is 50-60 hours per week with lot’s of travel, weekday training needs to happen before 7am…

Registered Nurse (Dialysis)

Work 3 days a week. Off 4 days. I don’t train on my work days. So I only train 4 days a week.

Job security very good but it’s hard work and kinda stressful. As for money it’s “ok”…supply and demand thing.

Business Consultant - pay is good ( over 200k), hours long ( worked 70 this week in 4.5 days), lots of travel ( M-Th), so I get 4-5 days of workouts. Monday is out, since I start travel at 3:30 am, at client site by 9:00, work till 9-10 pm that night. T<W<TH I can run in the morning, but Travel Thursday pm. Home around 9:30- 11:00 depending on weather and traffic. F<SAT<SUN are my workout days and mainly double up on those. On top of all that I have a 3 yr old and taking 10 hours in college classes.

Derivatives trade support at a Wall St. bank. Hours are M-F 8-6, so all training during the week is either early or late. No time to train during the day, since in order to use the company gym before 9pm you have to be an executive director or managing director.

Only doing this for a few more years until the wife and I boogie out of NYC to Charleston, SC. Then, who knows?

Future Emergency Medicine resident. First year is going to suck for training, but it will get a bit better. After residency, working as an ER doc is pretty decent for training and the salary will be sufficient. It’s going to be hard to dig out of the advanced state of muscle atrophy and complete loss of fitness that will probably happen intern year though…

Jodi

Another healthcare worker here - x-ray and CT tech. My schedule is a little peculiar, but bunches up my time into the middle of the week and alternate weekends. Two of my weekdays are 12:00 to 10:30 PM, so I get plenty of daylight to train.

As AlohaTerry says though, it’s sometimes a little difficult to motivate during my time off. Monday after after my “on” weekend, I’m frequently pretty exhausted. Sometimes my shift involves multiple hours in a row moving patients who are immobile, obese, or both.

Physical Education Teacher, Swim Coach, Track Coach. Currently taking classes towards my administrative certification. Not a lot of time for me to train for Ironman right now, so I stick with Xterras, Olympics and Sprints. But I hope try Lake Placid next summer when I am done with my admin. classes. Oh Yeah I have 4 kids too!

teacher.
I have it pretty good. My students are awesome (this year-it is up and down) and I am blessed with a late start. I teach elem. and since we are a late school, I don’t have to be in until 8:45. Although, I am in well before that. I have off in the summer, but do summer school to pick up some extra money. BUt it ends at 2:30. So I have a lot of time to make up for the lack during the year. It sucks when the kids get sick-because eventually I do to. I have ridden 2x in the past 2 weeks. Got sick. I am attempting to go out today.

I should look into a college professor job!

Started at 12 eh? I remember cleaning out the cold rooms at my Father’s butcher shop at the age of 8, kind of freaked me initially when they forgot I was there and shut the door with the lgihts going out! Still, at least they stopped sending me up chimneys by then

Well, I was born on a Sunday; On Thursday I had me a job.
I was born on a Sunday; By Thursday I was workin’ out on the job.
I ain’t never had no day off since I learned right from wrong.
Mama said I was bad, I did something to her head.
Mama said I was bad, I did something to her head.
And poppa threw me out, ooh, said, ““I gotta earn my own way.””
CHORUS:
I ain’t never been in trouble;
I ain’t got the time.
I don’t mess around with magic, child.
What I got is mine.
Whatever you say, Lord, well, that’s what I’m gonna do.
Whatever you say, well, that’s what I’m gonna do.
'Cause I’m the Working Man, Lord, and I do the job for you.
CHORUS
Every Friday, well, that’s when I get paid.
Don’t take me on Friday, Lord, 'cause that’s when I get paid.
Let me die on Saturday night, ooh, before Sunday gets my head.

CCR “the Working Man”
