I saw them in 1991. They were excellent.
Current work soundtrack:
Slightly disappointed they didn’t do Saturdays.
Sturgill released his new album as a single video on YouTube, making my way through it tonight.
“Make America Fuk Again” sets the tone. The opener blends all of these impulses into a rip of blue-eyed funk, inspired by Earth, Wind and Fire and the velvety tones of Steely Dan. Simpson is clearly having fun, as when he boasts that “I got that Hunter Biden energy/ I’ll make a hooker fuck around and fall in love.” But he’s also seething with anger, and the chorus features him crying, “Wanna make America not suck again/ Wanna start a revolution, watch it begin.” If the White House burns down, Mr. Blue Skies will be the first one to stand up and groove.
If I can make a suggestion, this is my workout album today.
Happy birthday David Gilmour
Using this one as my Concert of the Day from the live material… recorded March 5th and 6th, 1991, at the Paramount Theater in Seattle.
Listening to the latest Squeeze album, released today. Apparently, they recorded a bunch of songs that they had written when they were teenagers.
Meant to be good by all accounts.
Had this song on a playlist yesterday. Spotted Jool’s piano a mile off. The theme is about a guy killing his girlfriend. Not sure what the full story behind that is.
I was in a Grateful Dead mood today. I opened my streaming service, picked a live album I didn’t recognize, and boom, by total coincidence I have my Concert of the Day…
Grateful Dead - Madison Square Garden, March 9th, 1981..
A Spotify ad alerted me to the (embarrassingly over-priced) Grace Under Pressure Super Deluxe package release out this month. At least the audio files are available for purchase elsewhere (7digital, Qobuz). Although I was a big fan of the band in high school, this is the only Rush album I still own. I’ll agree with what others have mentioned online, the Terry Brown remixes aren’t better to my ears than the original.
Eighties’ fashion is questionable, but the music still holds up.
I added this to my concert a day list for September…
Have this on tonight in anticipation of the reissue finally out in May. Gap Mangione - Diana in the Autumn Wind. Reissue recorded and remastered in Abbey Road Studios under the watchful eye and attentive ears of Gap himself; the older (and way more influential) Mangione bro. Originals still go for crazy prices. Probably the most sampled record ever in hip hop.
80’s jam for this week. Yugoslavia 1983. Timeless. Translates as “Angels Have Power Over You”
Lettuce with the Colorado Symphony, found it on kanopy.
Keeping it early ‘80’s. Think he was better known as Bryan Adam’s touring keyboardist.
