What are the best Aero bars to get for my road bike?

Many of you may have seen my recent posts about fitting my Quintana Roo Caliente. It didn’t quite work out so I sold it. I, at least for the meantime, plan to use my road bike (Specialized Allez Sport) for my Duathlons this summer. I would really like to get some clip on Aero bars for it. What are some of the best ones I can get for a reasonable price? I’m not really interested in going carbon.

Are there other things I should do to make my road bike more race ready for duathlons and triathlons?

Thanks!

visiontech mini’s and youre good to go

I am also interested in getting some aerobars for my Trek 1500 SLR. I think I will only have time for one Olympic distance this summer, so I can’t justify buying a tri-bike. I’m thinking there must be something used on ebay. I was really surprised at the prices I saw at my LBS.

Profile T2+. Elbow supports are not fixed to the bar and can come backwards further so you get closer to an ideal elbow angle. It’s that or shorties.

I like the ones by vision tech.

I had Syntace C2’s on my roadbike last season, they worked very well for me.

Best? Hed FlipLites. Hands down the best clip-ons for road bars I’ve ever used. Last year I was converting my old Talon SL back to a road bike but still needed clips for multisport. I tried five different setups including Profile and Vision Tech. I didn’t want to spend the $295 for the Heds. But none of the others really worked well, even with mods. I finally broke down and ordered up the Heds. I cannot say enough good about them. Very low profile for clips so I can still get relatively low even on a road bar setup. The armpads flip up when I want to climb or ride easy on the bar tops. You can save a few pennies and just get the alloy extensions, which are more than adequate and don’t add more than 20-30 grams depending on your extension length.

Thank you for the post. The name is Hed Clip Lite.

Lots of options but check out the Oval Concepts A710. You can find them for as low as $90. online.

I will second the HED Flip-Lite suggestions. I have two sets of these and will never part with them. I have one pair for my road bike with shorter extensions and have another pair for when I am racing triathlons. I have the LAZY S-Bends for triathlons and I have straight and standard s-bends for the shorty version. HANDS DOWN THE BEST.

If there was no such thing as HED Flip-Lites then I would be using the Oval A910 clip on’s which I also have in stock. They are a great bar for a road bike with low armrest but they do not flip up which I do like but they do sit almost on the top of the bar and you can put your hands on them. The versions that I have came with the carbon single bend extensions and two sets of pads, carbon armrest and some risers. Good bar but just not as good in my opinion as the HEDS.

I’ve been using Pedalsoft’s trifecta on my road bike. I like them because they bolt to the stem versus clamping to the bar, much like the Oval system. I think Pedalsoft may be debunked now, so these setups can be had on eBay for <$100.

Thanks for all the help, when I use the aero bars, should I adjust my seat post height at all? How could I make my road bike most similar to a Tri bike?

Seat height should not change, you may want to slide the seat forward though, and possibly get a forward set seatpost.

This will open up your hip angle so you don’t feel your legs squishing into your chest/stomach so much. The downside on a road bike if you go too far with this is the handling will start to get weird.
