What are some of the things you don't do because of triathlon

besides quality time with family and loved ones, what are some little things you deprive yourself of during training. e.g., i don’t rollerblade because fear of twisting ankle/wrist; or i don’t go out drinking with my friends.

Sadly, especially for a Coloradan, skiing tends to take a back seat, as the weekends are dominated by longer workouts. sigh…

Hiking. A day hike feels like it takes too long now, and I wind up thinking “I’d rather be running this.”

This is a big source of sour grapes for my multiple friends who used to hike with me.

I love playing Squash but i don’t because it kills me physically. However generally speaking, i do my best not to deprive myself of anything because of triathlon. I am weary of it becoming the single thing that defines my personal and athletic life.

There’s very little that I don’t “do” because of triathlon. I still do the same things I’ve always loved to do/ Probably the biggest change has been lifestyle changes such as eating better, almost completely giving up coke from 5-6 per day, sleeping alot more, and watching signifcantly less tv. All good changes in my opinion.

Rock climb.

i rarely get to surf these days :frowning:

i really miss it but the time taken getting too and from the beach on top of the actual surfing time just don’t make it viable on top of family time and tri training.

I don’t do crystal meth.

team sports…a small part of me misses the camaraderie of playing in a team :frowning:

rugby in particular, touch football too…anyone whose played will know what i’m saying.

no regrets tho…tri is my thing now

I actually quit our neighborhood softball team two months out from my first HIM as I didn’t want to get hurt and blow my “A” race, but since then (1.5 years ago) I’ve avoided anything that I’m not very good at with potential to injure. I’m an avid snowboarder, but I find myself more tentative when snowboarding now. Sucks, doesn’t it?
I still surf and bodyboard about 5 days/week, though it was hard to find the time during IMFL training, but those are sports I’ve been doing for nearly 30 years.

oh yeah…snowboarding too! i just started the winter before last, then i found tri. took a week off this year to board down in the Sth Island (NZ) and came home beaten up bad!

I quit playing hockey. Not because of the conflict but because I like the swim, bike and run so much more.

Plus I don’t get hurt (as much)

All through high school I had always wanted to try downhill skiing, but never did because I was afriad I’d break a leg and not be able to run. Then I got a couple stress fractures from running, had a bike crash that caused another fracture, and I finally said, “screw it, I’m going to downhill ski!” I went last winter, and spent the day on the bunny slopes but had a great time, and didn’t get hurt. I’d like to get into it more, and it’s not so much the skiing interfering with training, but a money issue. Triathlon is expensive… skiing is expensive… I can’t do both, and I like tri better.

I don’t go to parties like a normal college student would, partly because they make me really anxious and partly because I’d rather go to bed early and then get up and s/b/r

I don’t consider those losses, though. I love triathlon!

The biggest one: I don’t starve myself. I was anorexic for four years, and it sucked. It wasn’t until I started getting into long distance stuff that I realized that you have to, like, eat! if you want the energy to train. It’s a long story, but endurance sports -distance running first, then tri - saved me from that eating disorder. So I guess that’s the biggest one

I don’t go out at night much because I would get home too late which would interfere with the next day’s training. I rarely go to the mall or the movies on weekends, either, because long, hard workouts on Saturdays and Sundays make me want to spend the rest of the day on the couch.

My golf clubs have a nice thick layer of dust. I think I have only played 2-3 times since catching the tri bug a couple of years ago.

Date.

I gave up all my horses and riding-my back couldn’t take both. But we do tris together as a family so I think it’s been the right decision-have not sold my horse stuff yet and it’s been 15 years-

I stopped smoking crack…

Golf and men’s rec-league basketball. Don’t have time/dollars for golf and am afraid of a stupid knee or ankle injury from the basketball.

As much as I used to or would like … But I am on a 5-year buildup in triathlon, complete with new bikes, more and more races, substantial volume training, lofty goals, etc … The plan is to eventually alternate seasons: One season spend time and $$$ on skiing; the next not; one summer do more backpacking and/or traveling, next season do more triathlons. Plenty of time to do it all, just not every month or even every year.

I don’t miss staying out late or drinking to excess at all … I can’t believe the friends I have age 30-60(!) who still do that. But then again I never was much of a partier to begin with.
