Okay, Lets say I have a Disc on the back; what aero front wheel would you use for the front for a very windy IM course with moderate hills for a 145 lb rider?
Nimble Crosswinds
.
…635 grams. Oh, and I just happen to have one for sale if you find yourself interested.
Nimple fly. That’s what I do.
How good of a bike handler are you? Are we talking 650 or 700?
In general if you are a good bike handler you can probably go with a deeper rim which will improve your aerodynamics, also I think that you might be able to handle a deeper rim on 650 wheels.
If you are on 700’s and you are not rock solid in your handling I say go with zipp 303’s or maybe a Hed j2 off of ebay.
If you feel you can handle it a 404 or Hed Alp’s etc will yield much better aerodynamics.
I have known and seen athletes in your weight range succeed with each end of the spectrum. It’s up to you and your assessment of your existing equipment to decide where you should go. In general i would say that if there is any doubt err to the side of caution (i.e. shallow rim).
You want an aero wheel with a low drag and a smaller dish. Hed Alps or Campy Shamal come to mind. The aero stats for the Alps is on the Hed site. There is a British wind tunnel test comparing a Shamal against a Specialized trispoke and Hed Cx. The Shamal was far less affectd by cross winds than the other two wheels but was almost as aero as the Cx(a very aero wheel) in other conditions. The trispoke is the fastest but also the most affected by winds.
I don’t have a url for the British test but if you do a goggle with the right key words you should be able to find it.
" do a goggle with the right key words "
Here ya go:
Konaby2008, its a 700c and I would consider myself a good bike handler. Would you consider a Hed3 carbon up front?
