Well, I finished my last Tri of the season today, and did pretty well. I have been off of the wagon for the past week (food, beer, training etc.) and still managed to shave almost 10 min off my sprint time from my first race this season. I finished in 1:16:57 unofficial time, and 66th across the line over all for the sprint, which looked like it might be good for 4th in my AG.
Given the fact that I watched three of the people that beat me in my AG pass me on the run, how do I spend my time in the off season training to RUN off the bike and not JOG.
I need to set some goals for my first race next year, and other than racing at 175-180 lbs instead of 185-190 lbs, do you guys have any suggestions for keeping focused during the winter months?
The course record for this race was 59:27. Do you think that given my time today and the fact that this was only my third race, that I have a chance at coming close to an overall win next year?
Thanks to all for your advice this season. I am totally hooked and will see you out there next year, so watch out.
Think about height/weight ratio. I know most people pooh pooh on the BMI, but… If you are under 6 feet tall you could probably race at 165 which would be a lot less weight to have to carry the distance.
Over the winter, really get working on pushing yourself to the limit. Especially on the run. If you want to win a sprint, you have to be willing to endure red-lining your heart rate for the entire race. Maybe, after each time you ride this winter, you could sprint a mile.
Just something to think about.
cyclocross, cyclocross, cyclocross.
i should warn you: cyclocross has converted me from a triathlete to a roadie for whom running is sprinting on foot 10m at a time over 40cm hurdles. but man oh man i am so much faster on the bike.
I hear what you are saying about weight, but I am down from 205 lbs, and I am almost 6’2". 175 will be as light as i have been since Junior year of high school!
I hope to get in alot of bike work over the winter (i know very boring) on the trainer. I hope this will keep me fresher for the run.
Does anybody have any advice for weight training? I spent the whole summer going without just trying to build some base. Is it time to get back in the gym?
