Download and run PestPatrol and Hijack This! software (Hijack This! is trial/free, PestPatrol will cost you about $40). These two programs identify and remove spyware from your computer. I can’t tell you all of the problems that can be caused by this shit - inability to acess email, resetting your default Home Page, crippling your internet browsing speed, et cetera.
Mike Aderhold has installed some new machines, including a new Compaq machine he just brought in with huge harddrive, faster processor, and no viruses.
A new spam filter is being installed now along with the usual Norton stuff.
We’ll give this a try. Nothing a few thousand bucks can’t fix…
I’d still download and install some spyware detection programs. PestPatrol runs just like anti-virus software. You’d be amazed how easily you can install spyware and never even know.
Our connectivity is slowly coming back on line. Right now we have two computers up and back on our network. One is a brand new Compaq box and the other is a rebuilt unit we made. the Compaq is the “office” or hub computer.
We’re on XP now too, which is nice.
E-mail is back on line at the old e-mail address with a spam filter that appears to be working.
Please note that all the old stuff was lost- old e-mails, everything.
The good news is, now- if you send me an e-mail, I can actually find it, read it and respond!
Thank goodness for Bikesport I.T. man Mike Aderhold.
Tom, if you’re rebuilding things, why not consider doing a weekly/monthtly backup of your mail archive. if you’re using something like outlook you can just tell it to archive, and then copy the archive file to an external hard drive or cd-r. If you ever get a system crash like this again, at least you’ll be able to have some way to see most of your old mail.
Just out of curiosity is your IT man full time or is that one of the many hats he wears. I’m in IT and it would be a lot cooler to work for a bike shop than were I work now.
