Wetsuits make triathletes appear soft

As some one who has done 10 70.3’s and 2 140.6’s since 2012 all without wetsuits, I feel that requiring triathletes to swim without a wetsuit would help triathletes shed the image of being soft.

Good for you.

I think you’d have finished faster had you worn a wetsuit.

Want to be a badass, slather yourself in Vaseline and swim across the English Channel. Want to intelligently race an Ironman/70.3 that’s wetsuit legal, wear a wetsuit.

PS: I feel like you are a moronic troll.

PPS: I have more respect for my shart-stained tri-suit, which has also had done 2 140.6s. They’re very soft, both the tri-suit and my sharts.

Who says triathletes are soft and why does it matter?

Triathletes considered soft? 🤷‍♂️

.

We should be doing them naturally and not relying on the latest technology to keep us warm.

Not a troll. I did the 2016 HITS Palm Springs 70.3 without a wetsuit. The temperature was 54 degrees and triathletes with wetsuits were whining about the water. They’ll never be Navy Seals. I probably would swim 10% faster with a wetsuit, but I’'m a category 1 swimmer.

Yeah! And let’s race on L’Eroica bikes and run barefoot! We shouldn’t rely on rubber to keep our feet soft either! You can wear socks, but would not be eligible for age group awards.

Slowman, ban this troll.

Do you also ride a fixed gear bike?

The event is hardcore, except for the swim. That’s my main point. How impressive would it be to have 2,000 athletes swimming 1.2 or 2.4 miles without a wetsuit in sub 60 degree water? From competing in the sport for twelve years I have concluded that when triathletes talk about the buoyancy and speed advantages, they are masking a fear of swimming in cold water.

Sounds like an opportunity for you. Set up this hardcore race in cold water that bans wetsuits. See what happens.

It’s a good idea. WTC is obviously trying to grow their brand and understands that prohibiting wetsuits would thin the field and hurt the bottom line.

I am very open about my fear of cold water. Hell, I’d wear a wetsuit even if it made me a bit slower.

on this issue of yours, if you only knew the degree to which i’ve been the devil incarnate.

I like to imagine that we are all missing out on Navy Seal recruitment phone calls because of concerns of softness due to wetsuit use
.

I don’t really give 2 shits about wetsuits (I don’t own one, but I would if I was likely to do lots of cold water races). But I have just one question.

What the hell is a category 1 swimmer?

I do my training and races on flat tires just to show how hardcore I am. People don’t ever draft either because the sparks can be dangerous, but I live for danger, which is why I soak my kit in gasoline before each race.

No softy here, nothing but iron, steel or perhaps something that is even harder.

Dan, I thank you for my first wetsuit, a lovely QR entry-level suit that allowed me, a swim
newbie, the confidence to experience open water swimming, which eventually led to IM shenanigans and all kinds of endurance racing fun in the years since.

Funny, when I don a wetsuit and get ready for that first swim in the spring I feel anything BUT soft!

1/10

PS: you are a crap swimmer
