Just seen that the temps are reaching the mid 30’s in Penticton - anyone know if there has ever been a swim without wetsuits there before?
not sure, but ther was a link here last week for daily water temps in penticton, 22deg a few days ago
13+ days to go
.
Where are you seeing the 30’s? http://www.acrossthelakeswim.com/ shows it is 21.3C.
Cheers for that, i’d forgotten that gets posted. Will keep checking the IMC website.
Eeekk, 13 days and counting indeed… am really excited.
If you go to the IMC site and check the weather on there in the Race Essentials the next 10 days of weather look pretty warm.

No.
It might be border line for the Pros, but you can be sure that for the AG’ers that you will be wearing wetsuits for the swim.
Lake Okanagan is a very deep lake and the water near the shore does warm up but further out it does stay cool. Also, changes in winds and lake currents can cause a turn-over and the water can go from being OK to quite cold in 24 hours as colder water from the deeper parts of the lake comes up to the surface. This has happened periodically in the last number of years.
As for the weather at IMC - the typical weather for the race is to have sunny, conditions with peak temps in the mid after noon in the high 20’s C to mid 30’sC. However, it’s a dry heat, so it will feel hot in the sun but cool in the shade.
Thank you v much, answered my question perfectly.
H
so it will feel hot in the sun but cool in the shade.
Are you sure about that
Dave
Are you sure about that
Of course your mileage may vary, but yes, when its 30C’ish and it’s dry as it typically is in the Okanagan, when you are sitting in the shade with a slight breeze, it actually feels quite nice. However, when it’s 30C and high humidity, sitting in the shade brings no relief - breeze or no breeze.
That dry heat does pose a bit of a challenge to people on the bike at IMC. If the wind is up on race day, it is even more challenging, because you will find that you are not visibly sweating on the bike - yet you still are loosing water through sweating, it’s just evaporating from your skin that fast in the dry heat.
Sorry … I just couldn’t let you get away with that! I live in Az and we always say that to people about 116 Degree weather … sounds hot but its really a dry heat (doesn’t sell very well).
Dave
No worries. Agreed that their is heat and then their is HEAT.
I was in India a number of years ago in June - the dry heat season there. Day-time temps were 45C+ Yet, running first thing in the morning when it was only in the mid 30’sC was actually not bad. The monsoon arrives in northern India in July, then it shifts to a humid heat - I found that much harder to deal with. Then 35C with close to 100% humidity felt like you were suffocating and drowning in your own sweat all the time.
No way will it be a wetsuit free swim. It might have been close as of last week because the weather has been so hot, but the last week we have had a cool front and rain.
…Joe if necessary would get one of the scuba divers you will see under you at the house boat to dive to the bottom of the centre of the lake with carrying ice in his suit to ensure the correct thermometre reading is obtained if necessary!!
However, it’s a dry heat, so it will feel hot in the sun but cool in the shade.
We’ve had cool temps all summer in the Prairies so I might need you to run beside me with an umbrella to ensure full shade for 26.2!
Mentioned the chances of a non wetsuit to Graham Fraser at Awards dinner years ago and he said “no chance”. As previous post said, they will find the one spot in lake where its cold enough. Safety is paramount, remember Utah. From an economics perspective, they would lose registration if it got out that this could be a non-wetsuit swim. Still, safety is key.

…
Still, safety is key.
yes - “safety” indeed…
I’m keeping my fingers crossed for cold.
**… **so it will feel hot in the sun but cool in the shade.
It's probably worth mentioning that there isn't really very much shade at all on any part of the course. In fact, I'd be hard pressed to name a single spot that I'd consider shady.
It will be shady in the med-tent and the penelty tent!
Bring your wetsuits kids.
See you in a couple of weeks, hope everyone is trained and ready!
