Wetsuit Selector Help!

After trying the 2xu SC:3 sleeveless in a MS and a the Blue Seventy Reaction in a small, I felt a little relief in the chest area but I still felt like I was “fighting” the suits with every breath.
I ended up trying Blue Seventy Helix in a M. I noticed two things immediately. The collar is sooo much better on the Helix than the Reaction, and i have a skinny neck. It is shorter.
The other thing is the shoulders. It felt like I wasn’t even wearing a wetsuit. More like a compression shirt in the shoulder area.

My race is Saturday. If I had decided to get a suit last week, I would have given the De Soto a try. I have one of their trisuits and like it very much. Good quality.
Just wish the front zipper was a little longer (maybe 2 inches) making it easier to pee.

Check out the desoto two piece wetsuits. You can buy a different size top and bottom for a good fit. They are wonderful wetsuits and, in my opinion, much better than one piece wetsuits as far as comfort/fit goes, e.g., they don’t pull down on your shoulders when you swim, and are more versatile than one piece suits, e.g., you can wear just the bib bottoms on those days when the water is warm, but not too warm.

I am 6’ 2", have a 32" waist and quite broad shoulders. I have an older T1 (without the zipper) that I got back in 2005. The only draw back is I find it a bit difficult to get the top on and off. This has been addressed with the new T1s that have zippers.

I recommend the T1 because you can mix and match bottoms and tops. You can get a separate long sleeve and short sleeve so you can adapt to the water conditions better. I am planning on getting a new T1 sleeveless top to go with the long sleeve I have.

What do you think about the sizing on the Hurricane 5? Spot on, or need to go up or down a size? Plus, did you or anyone you know try the Hurricane 3. Obviously, it won’t be as light, but wondering if the shoulder area is as flexible. I currently swim in a sleeveless, because I simply go much faster in it due to no shoulder flexibility issues. Unfortunately when the water temp is low 60’s to mid 50’s in some of the Irons and halfs I will be doing, I would rather have a FS.

Thanks for the help,
Chris

If you care about shoulder flexibility, go for a Synergy wetsuit. They are crazy flexible, and my Hybrid has held up beautifully for two seasons now.

Here is a cool video from a couple years back showcasing the flexibility of the shoulders:

Don’t forget the TYR Hurricanes. The Cat 5 has the most comfortable shoulders I have tried (for reference also used Zoot Superfull, Orca 3.8, Orca Alpha, and Blue Seventy Helix)

For small waist, thicker upper body wet suits, I’d look at these models: http://trisports.com/synergy-triathlon-wetsuits1.html
