Now… Who else thinks that it’s a no-no? I was arguing with someone famous on this forum, I swear we make fun of people that come to masters practice with a wetsuit. Am I the only one??? Maybe I need to reconsider what’s funny and not
That someone famous was correct.
If you’re racing with a wetsuit, you should practice swimming with a wetsuit. My athletes swim at least one day a week with a wetsuit, either open water or in the pool. It’s a question of specificity in training.
Ok, let me rephrase: Smartasscoach swims with a wetsuit in the pool, who else thinks THAT’s funny? We all know how much he likes swimming… I am sorry… It cracked me up:-)
I haven’t done it yet this season, but I plan to in a week or two.
Swimming in a wetsuit is SOOO different than swimming w/o. It’s important to get accustomed to it, even if you look like a jackass in the process.
ok… you have a point… But I have always been told that chlorine was BAD for wetsuits… I guess it’s funny because he JUST started swimming and wears the suit… Now, swimming in a lake with a suit, that’s different. i have tried my suit twice in a pool but I wouldn’t train with it on a regular basis. Also, it’s fun to make fun of paulo
I need to swim in a wetsuit in the pool, but as one of the people who laugh at others who do so, I will not because I do not like to laugh at myself.
I actually have a spare wetsuit right now AND the pool I swim in has UV treatment, which means it’s got really low levels of chlorine.
Also, I don’t have a problem swimming in the ocean… :-p
I just swam in the pool today with a wet suit. I have a half ironman coming up in three weeks, which may be a wet suit swim, so I wanted to get some practice in with it. My normal stroke is thrown off some when I wear one. The outdoor water around here in Iowa is way too cold to swim in now even with a wet suit. No one seemed to make fun of me, at least while I was looking anyway. But who cares?
Completely off the point, I swim at a pool that is used by the high school swim team here in Ames, Iowa. While I was putting my wet suit on, I was reading a list of state high school record times. I noticed that Tim DeBoom’s 200 IM relay team still holds the state record set in 1989. I think he grew up in Cedar Rapids, or somewhere near there.
Yea - well I swim at the Y and there used to be a couple of guys that would swim in the morning wearing wetsuits. Then, they had their bikes set up on trainers by the pool and they would literally run over and ride on them for a while after they were done swimming. Kind of interesting to watch - at least for me. the other lap swimmers, and the aqua aerobics class - hadn’t seen anyone do a swim/trainer brick workout before.
I realize a person has to improvise due to weather but an all indoor triathalon sounds so insanely boring. I don’t know how I could handle that.
I’ll be pool swimming in my wetsuit when I get it. I’ve got to practice in it as I’ve never worn a swim specific wetsuit before. The sea state here (and the wildlife within it) generally preclude swimming from the beach, and the local lakes here you would not want to swim in. They have things that eat you.
fortunately our pool is low chlorine and I’ll be rinsing the suit thoroughly after. The other problem I have is that the water temp is around 85 degrees as it’s an outdoor pool. It’s hot here.

Yea - Who knows - maybe they went and ran on the treadmill after they were done with the bike…
3 cheers for CA, land of 365 day outdoor training.
A very nice low blow by SAC, whatcha got now Marisol???
I’m with you Matt. I really need to get some wetsuit time but the idea of going to the indoor pool and swiming wiht it is killing me. Last time I went to my apt pool late at night and got some laps in. Not sure which is weirder, swimmign in a wetsuit in a small pool in the dark or swimming laps inside.

There are lots of reasons for swimming in a wetsuit in a pool, but it doesn’t happen alot.
-
It’s an outdoor pool and/or the pool water temperature dictates that it’s a good idea. (ie, we have a local pool (old 66 yard pool) outdoors, that is seawater (pumped across the road from the sea, and sorta filtered) in summer it’s fine but early and late in the season it can be downright cold. Wetsuit preferred.)
-
Specificity. you have a race coming up that is a wetsuit race and you want to learn or re-aquaint yourself with swimming in the wetsuit.
-
You are fat and your wetsuit smoothes out the bulges.
-
You have a rubber fetish and swimming in your wetsuit lets you fulfill one of your fantasies (wearing rubber in public)
-
It makes you feel pretty…all over.

You want to try for a PB. In the 66 yard pool noted above, we had a Xmas swim workout (southern hemisphere) and for a laugh we decided to see what our various lanes in our squad could do for 1500m PB’s. So, we donned out setsuits and pacelined the whole set, doing 2 lengths each, then pulling over and jumping on to the back of the paceline. My lane had a crew of 5 so it was pretty quick. My solo PB at that time for 1500m, in a freshwater pool was right around 23 min (not stunning I know, but all I could do back then) Well, in the long pool, saltwater, ideal temp, and pacelining with equal team mates, we managed to get the time down to 20:30! It was great fun and I am still trying to get that time on my own. It has given me a target for several years now and I get closer every year. Great Fun
Olaf does it and has one an Ironman.
Who else thinks it’s funny now?
Here come the grammar police Francois … I bet Olaf “won” an ironman
I swim in my wetsuit in the pool a few times each year just prior to racing to get the feel for it and practice taking it off. Where I used to live we always did the “day before the race” workout in the pool which was 4 x 100m with the wetsuit on then jump out of the pool and strip it off fast. Also, in the outdoor pool in town, even in the summer the pool is well below 70F so I used it a few times there last summer.
just wasn’t careful…that’s definitely a really bad wan
.
All right all right… I was just having a little fun trying to make fun of paulo. Nothing mean! I saw it more as he NEEDED a wetsuit in order to swim!!! But by the way… I have to congrats him for getting in the pool in the first place… Good job on that paulo:-) I think IMAZ is still open for next year:-)
