Wet Tyres, Dry Road = not good?

My riding buddy went down on a corner the other day. It was raining, he is inexperienced and is extremely careful on cornering in the dry, let alone the wet. I let him lead the pace so as not to put any pressure on him and he had slowed down sufficiently to take the corner in the anticipated wet conditions. However on the corner there is a tree and this sheltered the road surface for about 10 meters. Right in the middle of the dry patch, the rear wheel went out from under him and he took a hard fall. Since then 2 people have told me that wet tyres on dry road is worse than wet tires on wet road. Whilst this seems illogical to me, if true its about the only explanation of why he fell at the relatively conservative speed on this corner.

it can be true if there is a layer of oil on the road, that hasn’t been washed away by the rain. in the same way it can be really dangerous when it is the first rain in a while, and the oils haven’t washed away yet.

yep, also if there are road markings they can be very slippy too. not really sure how the wet tyres could work really on a dry road, i’d have thought as soon as they hit the dry road they would dry pretty quick themselves?
