Wet February (the fish thread)

Nice IM set on short rest there PP, my new elevated HR doesnt lend itself to short rest anymore for me when doing IM’s. Still a mystery if I will actually be able to race them well past 100 anymore, hope so… Pool was really hot today, was going to do a 1650 TT but was just way too toasty, so broke it up instead…

the cold pool was full when I got in, all lanes occupied… never seen that before.
Mostly slow old guys, felt slightly bad passing them but not that bad…
hamstring started hurting in breaststroke on 2nd IM, didn’t get a lot worse but it needs to be painfree before I can run again…

dont you split the lane when its full? or are you a one per lane kind of person?

did a double swim yesterday (2 x shorter type swims). wouldnt have done a second but there was a power outage so nothing else to do but go swim.

swam this morning as 3 x 150 fr 50 back then 2 x 200 FRIM
main as 200 400 600 800
200 easy 100 hard 200 hard 100 hard 400 hard
some faster 50s then practicing my dive trying not to splash too much

Hot ass pool again today, but got in 4k before melting down:

a full lane always fun times…

Doing a 5k OW event tomoz so did a hard session the day before yesterday, day off yesterday and today did a light one. Today was 1k warm up slow gentle then 100 200 300 100 200 (kind of trying to sit at lower part of my race feeling for tomoz).

Hope a friend shows up and we can at least swim together and have a chat afterwards.

Race entry is $85 tomoz - is that a joke ? a charity style swim so for a good cause I figure.

doing lot more 400 and up style intervals recently but figure my fitness is up , just feel like a busted dog and takes ages to start hitting faster times only later in sessions

Didn’t realize how lucky I am until reading these posts.

I don’t think I have had to share a lane in at least 5 years.

:flushed:

my advice to you sir? dont ever mention where your local pool is, if you want to keep your enjoyment of not sharing a lane

Well everyone can come to my pool, 5 or so empty lanes today and most days. Several of the water walkers have either died or are sick. The others it is too cold on the walk out, even though the water is 85/87 most days. And by too cold out, it is in the 50’s/60’s freedom units…

Felt ok today but was super cooked for about 3 hours after. Sometimes just dont feel horrible in the swim, but the hot water takes its toll later on:

hot water is no joke

when got to the beach today the furthest can was in some lumpy water with plenty of white caps. far far out. the life guards over ruled the race volunteer organisers and brought it back in. would have been pretty hard going out there for the beginner swimmer looking to try their skills out on the 2km course (the 1km course was in the inner part of the beach). still hard going out there for 2 laps for a 5km today but made swimming with the waves coming behind you very fun

off the start lost the top two guys but managed to eventually climb onto feet after about 400m and just followed them around until the last 500 or so when the international level guy put the jets on.

he blew away the kid who had led us around the whole course. he tried to hang with him but this guy would have been going around 66-68 per 100m pace range by then. way above our level. i just chased them to the beach and finished about 10 seconds back from second and 45 seconds or so from the first guy.

when its so rough doesnt make for fast or red line swimming but still nice to get in and get the t shirt.

1st swim in February, 6th this year…

Main 2x; 200 pull, 2x100 fs mod, 200 pull, 4x50 fs hard

Update: Day 47 and I’ve swum 65,300m (~700m ahead of schedule). Aiming to hit 11k a week between now and a holiday (no swimming for a week) at end Apr, so I’m not behind when I get back. Tried a bit of swimming with pull buoy between ankle, which was a first for me - and interesting: didn’t feel how I expected at all and maybe highlighted that I don’t really know how to hold my core when swimming. Or maybe it just highlighted that swimming with pull between ankles feels different from not doing that.

Never done that but I know that paulo used that method with mcelroy when building him up

No OWS for another 4 months here, so enjoying @waverider101’s posts.

knocked 70 minutes today as well
did a warm up as
500 mix then 5 x 100 IM as the fly and free head up freestyle but not a short stroke like water polo, instead a long stroke. feels really nice to then put head back down much longer stroke
then 5x400 200 400 steady
then 10 x 50 kick on 1:15
on a kick project to finish sets at the moment

Took your advice and after running 5k in the morning, decided to just go and float around. But my float around turned into 50x100, keeping HR lowish and my head as cool as I could. New PB for distance this year, so was happy about that.

feels good when you got the time hey

been watching this international guy at the last few ocean races and he wears a full race suit (he is a bit bigger around the mid section at the moment) but on the hot day was putting ice cubes from an ice cube plastic bag into his suit and cap andthen on the cold days he had foot booties. took this right up to the start chute and then took them off / left them there for his friend to get.

Working on head roll yesterday
