Wow, Koerner is tearing it up, but Lon is in 2nd by around 17 minutes at the last checkpoint.

I had a fabulous weekend. I crewed in 2003 for my friend, but she got pulled around Dusty Corners that year in the heat, so we didn’t go to the finish, so I’d never experienced it. I rode yesterday 5 hours, then drove up to Auburn to the finish and got there in time to see the winner come across, then we waited a good 25 minutes for 2nd place. Unfortunately Lon still had the Miwok effort in his legs and he voluntarily withdrew at 85 miles (I think). I hooked up with Hinds57 and drank his beer and we got Lon situated in the camper, then went to watch more finishers. Rod Bein finished in 12th place (11th male), just missing his goal of top 10. After Rod finished, Hinds57 and I zipped to In-N-Out at 12:40 AM, just getting there in time before their 1:00 AM closing and loaded up on burgers for Lon and Rod and Rod’s crew. I about drove off the freeway. I forgot to tell Hinds57 I don’t see so good in the dark. 
Crashed in the truck around 1:30 AM and slept until about 7AM when the coffee was ready (thanks Dave). Coffee, saw Hinds57 off, then I went and did a 2 hour run/hike down to the bottom of the canyon and back, cheering on the 28+ hour runners. Ended up walking with a guy from Sweden the last 1.5 miles as he was a little worried about finishing on time as he had tried it last year and had to drop. He was all chatty, so I stuck with him all the way to the entrance to the track and then sent him on his way for his finish in about 29:40.
Hung around and had brunch and saw the last finishers. Every single one got a rousing applause from the crowd and the very last runner came onto the track with less than a minute to go until 30:00:00. It was heartbreaking to hear the horn sound when she was only about 150 yards from the tape. A finish, but not an official finish. She only missed it by about 30 second.
It was a fantastic time. I’m so glad I went up there!

Saw your post this evening and it brought back some bittersweet memories of WS100, 2003…LDL, Naugs and I at Dusty Corners waiting for Jean. My thoughts were with her again today at IMCDA.
Sounds like you had a great time and hopefully, I’ll get back out to Northern California soon to have some more fun with ya’ll! Do you have any ultras planned for '07?

Yeah, that was a fun time for the most part, wasn’t it! But the good thing about her DNF that day was it enabled us to have even more fun in France that year.
I have a couple of ideas about ultras, but not sure how my schedule will play out. I’d like to go do that 50K in Phoenix again in February.

Dave, how did Lon do?
Sorry I did not make it over. Just too much going on to get ready to leave for Nationals.
My friend, Bill Kerth finsihed in like 28:58 or so which is cool. Anyone who completes that race under 30 hours
is a stud.

He was in the front 5 for the first 30 miles and #2 behind Koerner until the Ruckey Chuckey. That is where Miwok caught up to him and things started going south. He withdrew at 85.2 in Auburn Hills. Looks like the top 3 from MiWok all withdrew at some point in the race.
Koerner is a bad ass! That guy went out with the starting gun and led the whole time, just amazing. Here are a few pics from the day.

We crewed/paced Gail Snyder #88. She was a first time WS entrant, but has done Leadville 4 times, and many 50’s.
She was pretty solid through Foresthill, where my wife picked her up to pace. She hit most of the California loop stations right on, but had a big time nutrition bonk at the River. She hung out there for 45 minutes while they tried to get her to eat and drink, but she was toast. She dropped just before the mandatory cutoff. Her husband and I were waiting at the Green Gate until about 5am when my wife came running up the hill to inform us of her DNF.
We caught a few hours of sleep before returning to the track to watch from about 29:00 to 30:00. Saw the whole Terry Rhodes drama.
Had a nice run on the Quarry trail yesteray afternoon and today, my calf injury is coming around. Maybe I will survive this latest hit to the reactor Captain.
