Westchester Tri- Seeing some ST faces

So there was a little ST gathering at the Westchester Tri, thanks to Murphy’s Law wearing a ST shirt. Jason and the Viking Bjorn were there too and very approachable. A good time was had by all!!

I’ve been a semi-lurker on this forum. Guess I should have been checking this out prior to doing this race.

So…just how short was that swim? What was the deal with that?

And are the results posted anywhere? Their website isn’t updated yet.

600yds. was the general consensus from some strong/consistent swimmers. Maybe 500, because the the salt-water is faster and there was some good tide pushing back in. So somewhere in the 500-600 yd. range. I’m calling the swim 1100m for my own race calculations… As to why it was so short? I dunno. It has ALWAYS been a little short, but it seems to get shorter every year. Perhaps there was a strong current once you got out past the jetty and they were worried about that. If people got pushed past the jetty on the right-hand-side (looking out from the beach), that could be bad. And if people got pushed past the pier (on the LHS) that could be REALLY bad. Perhaps they were also worried about boat traffic. Or maybe they just did their math wrong. I dunno.

No results yet. I believe timing is done by Super Race Systems, but their site doesn’t have any results yet either.

I was told that they shortened the swim to about 1200 meters due to the water being a little rough. They felt it would be dangerous to go beyond the pier and the jetty. My swim times keep getting shorter and shorter in that race. In 2003 I was around 28:30 including the very long run across the sand, last year I was around 26:30 with a shorter run across the sand. This year I was 18:48. Normally I do a legit Oly swim in 28 - 30 minutes.

It seemed to me last year it took them several days to get the results posted.

Nice to meet everybody there. Especially over a beer or 3.

Results are up, I just printed 'em. Click the link for Athletes, then Results 2005.

OK, so I had no chance on Claire’s Climb, the fastest 2 dudes were a good 15-20 seconds faster than me. From the “Coulda/Woulda/Shoulda Department”, I probably coulda been 3rd AG’er, had I not had to wait for a horde of mostly purple menace riders to go thru the cones and over the timing mat. Instead of a standing sprint to finish, I got to spin slowly waiting my turn… oh well, it cost me nada other than a few places and mebbe some bragging rights.

Swim was about 1/3 short from my decidedly non-experienced perspective. What shoulda taken me about 30 mins (yes, I really am that bad) took 20.

FWIW, the bike and run courses seemed pretty accurate to me.
