Any-one else doing the Toughman or their kids doing the Toughkids this weekend? Weather looks iffy for the kids: (75 and few showers), and great for the adults 78 and PC. Looking forward to my son’s 1’st and hopefully a fast Sunday.
I’m in for the Toughman. I pre-rode the bike course on Saturday and did the run course on Sunday. The course is very scenic. I am really looking forward to Sunday.
I’ll see y’all there on Sunday.
Had hoped all the local big guns would be otherwise occupied (SOS, etc) and nobody would show up, and mebbe I could sneak in for some of that prize $.
Nope. Not gonna happen. Quite a few seriously fast doodes are registered. Oh well.
Hoping to finally put down a complete, good HIM this season, and Toughman is my last shot for '09.
I’ve had a great swim (Timberman) and a great bike (Harriman), still looking for a good run, and overall outing.
I am doing it as a 2 man relay, doing the run(Philly Marathon prep race). I know Westchester Road Runners, and Sunrise Tri will have tents set up. See you all there
Murphy’s Law what sort of times are these fast guys you are talking about going to have?
I think the #1 guy from last year was a pro, putting the #3 place (after pros) at 4:46.
I am not sure if that is how it actually works in terms of the prize money - i.e. if the #1 guy is a pro, then #2 becomes #1, etc.?
Anyway, I am there to smash my first half time of 5:14, on a tougher course.
See you there Steve and others.
I will be in Westwood kit, with my white Leader bike.
I checked out the park then drove the bike course last Monday & biked it on Friday. Good course indeed; trees cover a lot of the road so the sun won’t be beating down on us; scenic roads, many curves, beautiful up around the Titicus Reservoir too. Not many hills, although one significant one heading south on rt 100 after the GOldens Bridge. Rt 100 is wide and straight with a good bike lane. Most of the course has a nice smooth asphalt shoulder to ride on as well. I didn’t check out the run course…I’ll tackle that raceday and see how it goes…will be happy just finishing! Excited for this event as it is my first Half & I feel good.
I think Top 3 OA win $, Pro, AG, whatever. That’s my understanding, but I could be mistaken.
ST’er Kus was 3rd last year, but I don’t believe he’s racing again this time. (he is coming out for AmZof however, so I’m looking forward to that)
I’ll be in CMM kit, riding a black and white bike, hopefully very very quickly.
I think the #1 guy from last year was a pro, **putting the #3 place (after pros) at 4:46. **
was I THAT slow???
stefan
You would have been #3 **including **the pro I guess I meant excluding pros.
Not sure if #2 or you are “Pro/Elite”? I didn’t think so.
I thought pros couldn’t take AG money.
It doesn’t matter either way though!!!
funny, no I raced AG, as always. plus just checked the results again, the bike split of 2:14 is only to scare off the Murph, so he is really really afraid when we face off at AZ
the reality was something around 2:30 I think. something was wrong with my chip at T2.
stefan
ps: if you race for westwood, are you sometimes on the sunday rocket ride?
Yeah, I was gonna say, 2:14 bike, good swim, solid run, and only 4:31? You musta had a BBQ and a nap in transitions.
oh boy, the fire is on…
what I did was an cool down loop on the swim course, after the run, then crossed the finish line. better recovery than compression socks. plus the fog was gone by then.
Who won Toughman today?
Dominic Gillen, again. He CRUSHED it. 4:08 on what I’d call a “slow” course.
The other 2 Pros rounded out the top 3 OA. And got paid.
MEGA PROPS to Richard Izzo and his amazing (and numerous!) crew of staff and volunteers, who did a tremendous job today.
You would never know this was a 2nd year event, it was incredibly well run.
Weather was about PERFECT. Little bit o’ chop for the swim going out, which translated into a friendly current coming back in. Most agreed the swim was a bit short (as if I’d ever complain about THAT : ) - and between that and the current, swim times were on the faster side. Cool, clear water.
Good times.
Bike course is very rolling, turny, and had quite a few technical sections where bike handling skills were at a premium. Roads were good to very good for the most part, with a few notable exceptions - the side loop on the way back, which was fun (I’d ridden it before, back in the day, when I used to live near that area), was rough, lots of blind turns.
A bit of blustery wind, nothing terrible, but you noticed it.
Got stuck behind cars several times on the return trip into town, just luck of the draw.
Run course is tough, but fair. Mostly shaded (NICE!), coupla nasty hills. Net uphill going out, net down coming back, except for the worst hill on the entire course.
Trail section is a nice interlude. Going across the Croton Dam on the way back is gorgeous. Rez on one side, park and gorge on the other.
Other quick highlights - had a pretty nice little expo area set up. Sunset Tri had a P4 w/ the electronic shifting set up on a CT for test rides. VERY cool.
SISTEM did awesome massages after the race. I had 2 folks work me over for like 20 mins. Heaven.
Good post race food - pizza, bagels, fruit, etc - but also real BBQ, w/ chicken, veggie burgers, pasta, salads, baked beans, cookies, etc.
SWEET AG winner schwag - a Canon waterproof, shockproof digital camera - NICE. 12 megapixels. $330 retail value - WOW!!!
Plenty o’ porta potties, AND real bathrooms too. I think my longest wait was like 3 mins one time.
Ran into a bunch o’ ST’ers, always fun. Met quite a few other nice folks too.
2 minor bummers (for me) - no Coke (or Pepsi, all I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi) at the finish line. Red Bull Cola is, not a suitable substitute.
Thought there’d be BEER at the finish. No dice. (I thought Heineken or somebody similar was a sponsor?)
Thankfully my Boy Scout training paid off (Be Prepared), and I had SNPA in the cooler in the car. Liquid nirvana.
Murphy’s, nice meeting you today. I was at the True Motion Tent. Congrats on a great race. For the lack of beers at Tuffman, im sure tetsuoni will make up for it at AmZof. And I may just save you some when I’m done with the short course.
C’mon…fess up. What were the splits…did you have to stay in the 27T the whole race or were you able to wrestle the shifter into submission?
OK, here they are (I think; the run one is a guesstimate, since I took mile splits - some of which were ugly due to the hills)
S - 32:29 (yes - it was short)
B - 2:28 (I rode like a Mary, but probably still had the fastest non-Pro bike split - thanks, P4.)
R - 1:32-ish?? Not what I was hoping for…
12-23 cassette, and I did use the 23 several times. Hillier than I expected, and in different spots than what I thought.
The “big” hill is long, but not all that steep. Quite a few other shorter, steeper ones however.
Kus holds the 2:14 bike course record from what I see from 2008…did ML take it down?
I wish, make that somewhere around 2:28, and tie it with Murphy… my chip didn’t read and they just “gave” me that time.
Now the real question is… did ML beat my OA time from last year, or was the swim again the decisive factor?
Nice work man…were you riding at 65 RPM on those steep ones with the 23 tooth to keep it under 270W or did you just blow the doors off ? 1:32 is pretty solid as far as I am concerned . What position did this put you in. Do you think you could have swam sub 30 with the upcoming DeSoto water rover?
