I usually refer back to the old braclet test. Remember the WWJD bracelets? Those were very powerful reminders of who you are (if you are a believer). If Jesus walked up on a family grieving for a lost soldier, would he a) comfort them or b) put a protest sign in their face and scream horrible stuff at them. So is this fine family leading their life in a way that passes the bracelet test? No, they are haters.

I watched “Taking Chance” last night on HBO about a Marine Colonel who volunteers for escort duty for a KIA PFC Chance Phelps. I was so moved by the utmost respect and honor everyone showed the deceased throughout his journey from Dover AFB Mortuary to his hometown in Wyoming. The Colonel escorting PFC Phelps was so careful and so guarded of the boy’s remains and sacrifice, I can only imagine what he would have done if these ass clowns had shown up at the funeral or anywhere along the way. I believe it would not have ended well for the Westboro idiots.

I can’t think of one. For the life of me, I cannot think of anyone more un-Christian than these loons. This is rather un-Christian of me, but the idea of them disturbing the funeral of a dead soldier with their vile spew makes me want to deliver a world-class beatdown to those assclowns.

As an active duty Marine assigned to a reserve unit we provide military honors funerals for our fallen Marines (current and former). The westboro group of jackyls care nothing of the dignity of a military funeral or the emotional needs of the next of kin.
In short they’re the worst fucking people on the face of the planet. If you want to meet some of the best check out the Patriot Guard Riders. I have had the pleasure of meeting literally hundreds of these great men and women whose only desire is to preserve the dignity of the military funeral. I have worked with them on no less than 15 funerals in which they provided an escort and human barracade from the assholes.
I have literally seen groups of opposing “outlaw” bikers gangs converge to do the right thing, then go about thier own ways afterwards. At all times the highest respect is offered.
They are a group of ignorant, vile asshats. My uncle Jerry is a liberal, gay-loving Lutheran pastor in Topeka, Kansas. Needless to say, he is on the Phelps straight to hell list. Good for you, Uncle Jerry.

They are one of only a few very good arguments IMHO for restrictions on free speech. Sometimes taste and manners should win out.
They are the perfect example of why all free speech should be protected; the more they run their filthy mouths, the more effectively they reveal themselves for who and what they are. If these people are among us, I’d rather know about them than not.
It’s precisely because decency, good taste, and manners win out that these people are notorious and universally loathed. Free speech shines the light of day on these cockroaches, and it’s a beautiful thing to see.
Patriot Guard riders. I was coming back from a trip last year and stopped to get gas. It was cold and late. I started talking to a guy on a motorcycle who was getting gas. He was one of the Patriot Guard. He had given up his weekend, and driven 5-6 hours each way to stand guard. I shook his hand and thanked him for what he was doing. I wish I had thought to pay for his gas and food.
They (Fred Phelps, at all) picketed a church (episcopalian) I attended for allowing women to be bishops, much less, allowing them on the alter at all.
Phelps hails from Topeka, KS, about an hour’s drive from Kansas City, and has been an embarrassment to the midwest for decades.
The rest of the world can have him, as it dilutes his vitriol here. We still have pockets of the KKK, so this right-wing nut job is an export we’d rather not keep to ourselves.

I’m wondering if they did their protest this morning at the Church I attend. They were targeting three churchs in the DFW area… Since I go to Saturday evening service a few stafff members were telling me about it. I was thinking up of different signs to counter theirs, Like “i have a sign” “bacon rocks” “invade mars” but was asked not to do it, Just either ignore them or be respectful of their right to protest. A couple of staff members said if I wanted to do something, just take them out some coffee since it was going to be cold out.
They had a pretty good counter protest in San Fran. BUnch of people show up across the street with signs that say, among other things…
“I HAVE A SIGN,” “GOD HATES SIGNS,” “I WAS PROMISED DONUTS”
These folk are exactly the same as the extreme fanatics from any other religion - including the ones we in the West often caricaturize all members of the Muslim faith as being, for example.
Most Christians, Jews, Muslims, Brahmans, Taoists, Buddhists, etc are good people who only want peace and harmony for themselves and those they love. Then there are the psychotics that can be of any faith, who go around blowing up abortion clinics, terrorizing the funerals of fallen soldiers, and crashing airplanes into buildings.
It’s a sad, sick place to be…
As clear as it is that the Westboro Baptist Churchies are total dicks, this statement is inaccurate. I’ve never seen or heard of anyone from the WBC suicide bombing a funeral or beheading a non-Christian. It’s my understanding that they as an organization are meticulously non-violent.
