Sarah and I are doing the Chicago Muddy Buddy race this weekend. We’re do a splash feature with fun photos for our website that will be up on Thursday, September 15.
Dan just mentioned an idea for a couple’s event, and that got me thinkng about Muddy Buddy, why it appeals to people and the unique nature of the event.
I see events like this (two person team, adventure concept…) having a bright future. Check out the photos and story on our website next week on the 15th (Thursday).
Done Muddy Buddy a couple of times. It’s the most fun event I’ve ever done. The course is short enough that about anyone can handle it. Its a great way to break out of whatever rut you are in and enjoy a good workout. The goodie bags have been pretty nice in the past, with lots of actually useful stuff. If you just want to have a good time, give Muddy Buddy a try.
When I started investigating the event I was amazed at how big it has grown. It’s based on the old “Ride n’ Tie” events that involved running and horseback riding.
Bob Babbitt of Competitor Publishing owns the event and Michael Epstein Productions does the production. It is a 100% first class event. The race is a microcosm of Eco-Challenge, Ex-Terra, adventure racing and reality TV with some Dr. Phil style relatonship counseling en route.
Given that Sarah and I are tying the knot in January this should be a pretty interesting experience…

Hi, my name is Tom and I need attention. Now that the “we’re getting married” thread has petered out I’m needing more attention, so please check out my feature on Sarah and me on my website that will be up on Thursday, September 15. Someone starting a thread on Sarah (and/or me) afterwards would be in order. Thank you sirs and madams.
You’re the Devil’s Advocate and that is the best you can come up with? You have to be kidding…
I’m a big fan of the concept of opposition prep. You get the smart guys to play opposition so that you can nut out any holes in the idea. In the past you’ve come up with a lot of good, intelligent and well reasoned ideas… I think you’ve earned a lot of respect and have created some really good discussion.
The above post is just pointless. I don’t know Tom, I’ve never met him… but even if you think it’s your job to challenge every post, do you think it’s your job to make those kind of assumptions? If anyone else had said it then you would have been all over them for a baseless, un-reasoned post.
If you want to hold everyone else to account you better make sure you hold yourself to the same standards, otherwise your just another source of white noise and a waste of our time.
My finace’ and I are doing this race. We’ll get all muddy. To see pictures of us covered with mud visit our website next Thursday. Read the bike reviews too, then buy a bike from us.
Is that your pet name for her? Is it like a cross between “feline” and “nice” and “race” (obvious references to your cats, Sarah and triathlon).
And before you two cowboys come riding back in on your high-horses, I, like others, tease Tom, and being the man that he is he takes is all in good stride. He’s human and admits it. It’s why we like Tom. Trust me, he doesn’t need you two drugstore cowboys to defend him (Yeah… notice that smiley… it was on the first post as well Chip and Buck)
sounds fun. i tried to get my wife to do the one in denver with me. she said no. she’s a smart cookie, that one. and a dirty girl. just not that dirty.
have fun. i think the point of these races is to have a blast with your best pal.
Have a great time. My non-swimmer friends love the event and travel to Colorado (I’m pretty sure) to do it every year.
My advice is to curtail your military past/competitive nature and focus on getting dirty…no pun, of course. Don’t let competition get in the way of having fun, especially with the Mrs.
