Wendy's (6/10/07)

Am I to assume that anyone else here who did Wendy’s this morning is also waiting for times to be posted before weighing in, like I am? Last year they had the times up before the race was even done, but this year I guess we play the waiting game. Ah well. I’m dedicating the rest of the afternoon to waxing the car - it’s too beautiful a day to waste - so there’s not that much of a rush.

newbz, were you there? I didn’t see you around today.

Anyone hear anything more about the fellow (I’m assuming it was a guy) who had that nasty accident on the overpass? I didn’t see what happened for myself, but heard from a friend (who was right behind him) that he hit the expansion joint/seam between the pavement and bridge, his front tire popped up and came down a little askew, and he wrecked hard. I came through a few minutes afterwards, when the ambulance was already there, and a good 8-10 bikers had stopped pulled over to the side, and didn’t see anything in passing but legs splayed against the jersey barrier guardrail. The truly scary thing is how close he must have come to going over the barrier, off the bridge, and onto the freeway 40 feet below. That would have been it.
I heard (not to spread hearsay or anything) from those who got a better look that it was bloody and b-a-d. I hope he’s ok.

I am waiting as well… It sounds like I went by the accident very close to the same timeframe as you. I hope the person is okay, it didn’t look like very good.

Was this race at Alum Creek outside Columbus?

Michael - this is Andy (from last year)…good to hear you are sticking with things. I saw you out there today, bike looked strong.

I spoke with the EMT…the kid was pending surgery, seperated shoulder, but amanzingly, don’t think he broke anything and should be fine. I don’t what he was doing though. Our team (including a lot of beginners), rode the course 3 times, and never had any issues. According to the EMT, he literally had to hang on the guardrail to avoid falling over the ON TO THE INTERSTATE…the whole accident just sounded really weird.

Hey Andy,

Great to hear from you (and I’m impressed you gleaned my name from the Lithuanian version I copped for a username!). I saw you momentarily this morning before the race, but I had my hands full wrestling all my stuff out of the car, and didn’t manage to run into you later on. I did spend some time chatting with Sam and Russ, which was great. So you managed to get a few of us hooked, apparently  The race went pretty well for me all told, and it was a gorgeous day for it.

I’m glad to hear he’s basically all in one piece, if not completely all right - it looked like a pretty scary situation as I went by. Hanging onto the guardrail sounds really freaky to me. I’m not a fan of edges of high places and things like that - thats a nightmare.

The race results have been posted…

I pulled a 2-fer this weekend. Went and did Flag CIty on Saturday and the Wendy’s on Sunday. The difference between the races was night and day. Flag City was organized, well-run, fun and cheap. Wendy’s was disorganized, started late, very expensive for a sprint and drafting was rampant on the course. I saw the accident and I think the kid was in a big pack of riders drafting. There were a couple of crashes at Wendy’s. I think USAT officials may have helped this race by monitoring the draft packs.
