Pretty cool. I remember Alan Page running a marathon decades ago (before he went on to become a judge). I am really impressed by these pro athletes who press themselves after their playing careers are done.
Cool story. It is interesting how much weight some of these guys put on their bodies to play the sport. They are amazing athletes for sure.
I was listening to a Rich Roll podcast a few weeks back about Josh LaJaunie (http://joshlajaunie.wordpress.com/2013/11/20/free-josh-lajaunie/) who used to play football in college and put on like a 100+ pounds to play the sport. He is now at a much more healthy weight and doing endurance sports.

Sadly that was my first thought too. Look at all the huge linemen that now are TV commentators. Lots of slimming down for those dudes too.

Bingo.
But for me, it was not a thought, it was a certainty.

I thought such statements were forbidden here without proof?
Know him, have run with him, know his wife and awesome daughter. As far as the weight loss and the training for this marathon goes- you can say what you want about PED’s, but I think he is clean and I think the accusation is wrong.

Not sure if I need proof that there are thoughts in my head in response to my reading. Or that one needs proof to put the subjective adjective ‘amazing’ in front of ‘PEDs’. In any case, here is some good reading:
NFL player: "It’s like clockwork nowadays, Not tested and it’s easy to get. Nowadays, dude? In 2013? Fck, yeah. I’m just being real." *

Yeah, it’s sad.
But it’s reality.

Here on ST, last I heard, any accusation of PED use without specific evidence was verboten. Not like cycling is different, but you’re not allowed to say a specific cyclist is doping here without proof.
No worries, I was not and cannot say specifically about any athlete and PEDs (well, unless I find them with a finding and penalty from WADA).
I was just saying that I was certain that ‘PEDs are amazing’ in the NFL (and NBA, and NHL, and so on … ).
This +1. Not accusing anyone specifically.

Next time you run with him - see if you can work on that heel strike.

To be clear, I was not referring to his running. But when I see “before/after” pics with such a stark contrast … whether it is him or some other pro athlete … that is my thought. When you look at all the bloated, pumped up NFL players, especially those that play “in the box” … it just reeks of PEDs (steroids, HGH, etc.). The NFL has a long history of PED usage and to this day has not agreed on HGH testing.

One thought from reading your post…his marathon time is faster than yours. I have as much evidence as you have.

So a Guy stops lifting weights and eating like …well an NFL lineman!! …and starts running daily and tada…HE SLIMS DOWN and goes sub 4 in a marathon!!
Awesome!!
PEDs???..no idea why this get thrown into the thread!
He has obviously developed an aerobic engine under all that muscle mass so get him to try his hand at cycling now and report back on his wattage.
Bet those would be some gawdy numbers
.

It is to be noted that due to the high usage of PEDs that we (society in general) have moved to a position of assuming everyone uses them as opposed to assuming everyone does not.
It is also true that in general “we” (society) doesn’t care enough to do anything about it. Sure, a few upstarts on ST and some outspoken folks but for the most part, usage is at best ignored and swept under the rug and at worst is systematically encouraged and mandated.
Until the major Pro sports teams (Football, Soccer, Baseball, Hockey, Basketball) decide to devote money and resources to eliminating doping, nothing much will change.
And to answer the original post, No. Not NFL, not CFL, no College, not Hich School likely. But then I’ve never played the sport so wouldn’t know how.
I have as much evidence as you have.
I’ll just point out as well, that decreases in “T” and decreases in HGH production both correlate to an increase in bodyfat % and obesity. (Here, and here.) What happens as we get older and our hormone production drops: we get fatter.
So stopping that stuff wouldn’t seem like a good way to suddenly cut bodyfat and get in shape for a marathon.
Just the opposite. If a fat lineman wanted to quickly cut weight for a marathon, PEDs are a great way to do it. So it’s more likely that Faneca learned from us (and by us I mean the rampant doping in endurance sports), rather than escaped the PED culture of the NFL.
In any case, I think it’s absurd to bring up the term PED in this thread without evidence. Faneca is doing the right thing. He’s an outlier. Most linemen who get out of the sport don’t drop weight, PEDs or not.
whatever he did…it doesnt seem healthy to lose that much weight so fast. Its not ‘The Biggest loser’ where they are shedding pure fat…this guy was full of muscle…and had to lose alot of that in an unhealthy manner. I bet his kidneys are screaming for help. I like the guy and he was a good NFL player…Im happy for him too. But he didnt JUST change his diet and change his workout.
