Last night marked the first triathlon training I have done in a year. Training was going strong in February 2008 when I changed law firms and proceeded to have my busiest year as an attorney. The stress of the new job and the additional work pulled me (and I let it) entirely away from training. Even though I didn’t train from February on, I started IMAZ last April (I had already paid for it and the temptation was too great), but had to WD 75 miles into the bike when my legs and then my face started to cramp. After IMAZ, I sold my tri bike and race wheels and started to lift weights to regain some strength that I had lost while training for IMAZ.
Then it happened…about two weeks ago, I let a friend borrow my road bike so that he could train for a sprint triathlon in May. The thoughts going through my head belonged in the infamous whining thread. So last night, weighing in at 195 pounds, 30 more than my “triathlon weight” (mostly muscle of course), I went for a short 3 mile run to test the legs and the lungs and to satisfy the whining voices in my head. Bottom line…I am much stronger and much fatter than in my triathlon days and my lungs do not like lugging 195 pounds around the block, let alone 3 miles. BUT…I am back at it and excited about the possibilities.
