Weight Training (Non-racing & Racing Season)

Just getting back into the sport after 15 years. I remember the axiom of “do all your weight training in the winter” and forget it during racing season. Is this still typical?

Once you get into the older age groups (55-60) does weight training as part of the overall program help during the summer or racing season. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
