Weight (1)

Calories are energy. Energy is force times distance. The force increases with increase in riders weight, and speed due to aerodyanmic changes (not really a factore until speeds above about 20 mph).

I’m tired, yes these rules of thumb do not apply to the 6 sigma of a population and thats on both ends of the fitness schedule, maybe not even the 3 sigma tails.

But fexy if I give you weights to load you up to my 235lbs, and you run 1 mile and I walk 1 mile. We have used the same amount of energy, same as if I run the mile and you walk. We both moved 235lbs 1 mile. Thats it.

Now the part that gets cloudy, 1 the time it takes to do it, cause we are also pumping blood and air, so energy is being used there and that can differ. Our efficiency are also different If you are 100% eff. I am only 50% eff. then you will burn 1 calorie for every calorie or work you do. I will need 2 calories for every calorie of work I do.

I always love this cause the more fit you are and the easier you burn calories it means you are actually LESS efficient.

Ok, then we have the question of how efficiently your body turns the calories you eat into calories usable to your body.

These 2 efficiency are very hard to quantify and different for all. Also on the intake side they change with the food you eat, cause some food calories just pass through, nobody measures how many calories are in there bowel movements or urine.

Ok, time for bed…

Good night slowtwich…

I’d probably follow a strict weight loss regimen via low cal diet, find a cheap bike (Leader) on ebay, then put the rest of the benjamins toward an '05 Roth IRA contribution.

Last summer, Big Duke 6 and I went on a weight loss program, staying fairly close to our programs. I wore a 50-52R (depending on the cut) suit to work. Today, while those suits would make Batman cringe, I wear a 42R. And this was solely due to ‘pushing away from the table’ and beating my a$$ to Spectrum (membership gym) lifting weights, Spinning and then buying -me- a present: A Kestrel Talon SL with all the bells and whistles.

I will never look back nor allow my fat-f’ing a$$ to get like that again.

Now get busy! Don’t give zeros a bad name.

Good luck,

I’m new to the sport and had a few questions about buy a bike. I’m about 5’5 and weigh about 215lbs. Should I lose a few pounds first before I purchase a bike? Anyone have any suggestions for entry level bikes? I was looking to spend in the $1000-$1300 range. I found a Specialized Transition for about $1100; I think it was the multi-sport. Thanks for the help!
I believe that there are a few men and women in or close to that weight range here on Slowtwitch. Also one of the posters here lost something like a hundred pounds riding his bike, I believe. Maybe they can provide some input into the only issue that I could see, and that is whether you would need stronger wheels. Otherwise I would say ride Forrest ride.
