Filling in for @Dr_Tigerchik.
Did you meet your goals for last week?
What are your goals for this week?
Didn’t meet goals… had two day of using the unhealthy coping skill… in a row
but am 2 days in a row back on track now!
5/7 days not using a particular unhealthy coping skill
either 5/7 or 6/7 days journaled
5/7 days practicing the pause deep breathing skill
goals for this week
check in at 9 days in a row next week
7/7 days journaling
7/7 days practice pause skill
Goals last week reached. Rest week here. Pretty beat by the last couple weeks of getting back into running.
I’ll get some yoga in this week to try and get a little more flexible.
Two gyms and two PTs achieved last week, failed on the actual training part. Again. Ugh.
Same goals this week: 2x gym, 2x PT, 1x each s/b/r.
Considering reengaging my therapist to see if I can figure out how to honor my commitments to myself the way that I honor my commitments to other people.
I also signed up for both the aquathlon and the super sprint aquathlon with the giant inflatable slide start at multisport nationals next year, which I am quietly delighted about participating in.
Happy with last week. I managed to get at least 25,000 steps per day except for fly home Sunday. Even then managed 10,000 with an early 4 hr flight, 3 hr drive and a 3 hr time difference. I got a bit of running done most days so that was good. 4 days of mountain “running” coming up starting Saturday.
I got out in the kayak yesterday just rolling the arms over first time for 3 weeks. Then hilly hiking with some easy hill reps. Today I just jogged 4 x up an old favourite gnarly 1 in 3 steep hill. Pretty slow but felt good.
We had a very enjoyable 3 weeks of roadtripping in Western Australia. I managed my occasional anxiety issues very well.

Wrapping up a rest “week”. I worked in a couple yoga sessions trying to limber up a bit. Today was an easy run. I’ll get back to the hard ones this weekend. The couple rest days have felt so good, now onto the hard work.
Finished my 1,000,000 steps on Wednesday. Was shooting for the end of this week, but got inspired and finished with 4 days over 30k steps, with Tuesday being 51k.
The last 2 weeks have been kind of difficult, but it has caused me to work on my ability to look at things on the bright side.
Last Monday, my wife packed a bag to leave the family and go back to live in Mexico. She had been a bit upset with me, but very upset with the kids. But on Tuesday the kids had their best day in a long time, being well behaved, effective in their studying, and helping more around the house. (We homeschool.)
Then Wednesday, the car broke down driving the kids back from a friend’s house, and there weren’t many people around (and I didn’t have a cell phone) and the tow came after midnight. (And it was cold.) But the president of the swim team saw us and advised one of our friends about it, and they came to help, which was fantastic. And I was fortunate, because earlier I had driven on a longer trip on a much busier (and dangerous) highway and hadn’t broken down there.
The next day I discovered that the back-up car had a (mostly) flat tire caused by a faulty valve stem.
Well, both ended up okay. The mechanic (for the 1st car) said they couldn’t look at it until this week, then (the same day) they called to say they were waiting for the part, and at the end of the day the car was ready! (It was a part they had replaced only 2 months ago.) No charge!
For car #2, I took it to the place that had replaced my tires 2 months ago, and they took care of it in far less time than they had estimated, and no charge as well!
Finally, my 23-year-old said to me 2 days ago that I look pregnant! (He was with the 14-year-old who’s always razzing me about it.) But I look at it as a win! A month ago I was about 35 lbs. over my desired weight, and everyone knows that’s too much weight to gain for a pregnancy, but now that I’m only 30 lbs. over, it’s possible. (Except for one problem…)
More seriously,
Summary of last 10 days and goals
Exercise:
I’ve finished my 3rd week of PT stuff, and will see if I can start playing violin/viola again. (The local youth orchestra has asked me to play cello and viola and there’s a rehearsal this weekend.) It’s feeling a bit better, although the healing is not done yet. (Yes UK2ME, I still play, although intermittently lately. Have you done the Mozart clarinet quintet?)
I’m starting to do the hand-cycle to strengthen the whole area (they have me do it as warm-up at PT), and have been doing the proscribed exercises at home. I hope to get something besides a red light this coming week in terms of swimming or riding in aero position.
I’ll be doing 5 miles on foot with 400-800m of form running (40% effort) daily.
Starting (indoor) biking now that the steps have been completed. (And doing some neck bridges.)
Other:
Academics 3-5 hrs/day, but staying on topic (where I normally fail, and have been lately.)
Reduce wasted time. (Mostly internet; there’s been some improvement, but more needed.)
Organize the house 1 hr/day.
Edit:
Just completed 15 minutes on violin without too much trouble, although my left hand was tight and, if my old violin teacher saw my (chicken wing) bow arm, he would kill me!
congrats on the steps finishing!
That’s… a lot. I deeply admire your ability to keep looking on the bright side. I hope you get to play with the youth orchestra, it sounds like fun!
I’ve not played the Quintet in a goodly number of years. I did suggest to the music director of my community orchestra - following a particularly ropey organ soloist we endured - that if he wanted to do a clarinet thing, I’d play the Weber Concertino. (I don’t know what I was thinking, frankly. I’m not usually that audacious.) He let that one sit for a few months but came back to me a couple of weeks ago and said he’s programming it for May, so I’m going to so have to get back to work!!
In the spirit of “shiny things motivate me”, I bought a new XC mountain bike yesterday that’ll be my cross tri race bike for next year. So now I’m letting that be my driver for improvement.
I’ve gymmed twice and PT’d twice this week, so the goal is to squeeze in the s/b/r parts over the weekend.
That’s great you’re getting to play that!
If you’re like me, you get very nervous about having a big solo. What I found helped was busking ahead of time. It got me more comfortable with playing (solo) in front of a lot of people, although it didn’t cover for the nerves caused when the lights went down. But you’re probably more used to the solo business than I am, since your part is not typically doubled, whereas as violinists we tend to have masses of others to cover if we screw up in orchestra.

@UK2ME, congrats on the new wheels.
Long intervals this morning on a beautiful stretch of coastline. Unfortunately, the wind seemed to always be coming at me.I guess I got through them, but my goal feels a long way off
Completed (not competed) first 2 days of 4 Peaks event. Perfect conditions so far but weather might turn tomorrow some time.
Both days were done with a good degree of caution. Both were quite slow but done with a smile on my face. Two days to go tomorrow the longest stage.
