I have a series of Road races and criterions pretty much every weekend from now until April. What do you guys recommend as far as training to get better, while still remaining fresh for these weekend performances?
I have read a bit about prioritization, and my goal is to perform fairly well at the collegiate conference champs the first week of April, but at that point, UFCF races are at their peak, so I have difficulty picking an end all “Goal Race.” especially when you consider that States isn’t until September.
I guess what my question is, what should an average training week look like if it ends in a fairly unimportant race (in and of it self).
Every weekend? Your pushing it to be fresh for all of them. My general rule is if I have a race on Sunday, I take Friday completely off and only train about 30-40 minutes with some intensity on Saturday. Then for the other days of the week I schedule my workouts according to how important the race is that weekend. If your racing every weekend and they are not very important races then I would just train like normal M-Thur. Use Friday as your off day and do some short intensity work on Saturday. Then on Sunday after the race, go for another training session, maybe just a long easy ride. This way you can get in 5 quality days of training (counting the race), still make your race, and get decent recovery.
1-2 weeks from collegiates you are going to want to look at a taper plan.
