We Test Hookless

True that has been fixed.

Aren’t these hookless? He says he “hit something and the tire came off the rim”

Yep.. he said he hit a big rock doing like 30 mph hour. We wish that man a speedy recovery.

Actually he said he “Might have hit some debris or a rock in the road.” The last thing he remembers is “his tire falling off the rim”. Here is the link.

In this post yes.. that is 100% what he said.

The first man gets the oyster, the second gets the shell… but also pioneers get killed! Being first is not always the smart move. Let time and the tech sort themselves out. That is why clinchers are still widely used

I was wondering when his wreck was going to get pulled into the hookless debate.

The picture shows the carbon rim smashed like it hit a big rock. I don’t know if we’ll ever know if that was the cause of or the result of his tire coming off the rim.

Absolutely gutted for him though. Especially after his long build back from surgery.

i question the premise. inflate a tire, then clamp the tire tight to the rim. check pressure before and after clamping. what’s the difference in pressure? i only pose this because i have done that test and i could not find much of a difference. maybe something with my protocol, i don’t know. just, maybe worth a think before we assume there is a “sharp increase in pressure.”

Yes, this is an ill-conceived mental model that doesn’t hold true. The pressure increase, worst case, is only proportional to the volume reduced from the impact. This is highly dependent on the object shape, size and tire pressure. Volumes of objects struck and ultimately transferred to the volumetric “reduction” of the vessel are on the order of single cm^3 whereas the volume of the system to start is 1200+ cm^3 - changes would amount to 0.5psi at worst.

Why does marcag need to test it? You built the test rig and did the test already for many other tires. Would it be difficult to add 1 more tire to the test? Do you need someone to send you a tire?

No and I plan on doing that and also some other tires. But no matter what I do @marcag seems to find something wrong with it.. So if he is that concerned with things.. Why wouldn’t he just do that himself. That was my only point.

that mirrors my results. i could not find a meaningful change in pressure when i did that test. seems like there should be a pressure increase, intuitively, but in fact i couldn’t find a change.

there are some meaningful tests one could do on hookless rims and eric just did everyone a big service with his testing. marc is right, what matters is whether this wheel style works on the tires he wants to ride because one area where marc and i agree is that the tire drives so many equipment and design decisions. if i wanted to ride a zipp wheel and a conti tire i would just put the tire on the wheel, blow it up to 120 or 130psi, let it sit in my garage for a week, and see what happens.

There were no answers given, i wish. All there was were a lot of blabla and empty words. You do recognize that all this testing you are doing now is only because this tech was made. If there were only hooked road wheels this was all unnecessary.

The need for tire pressure testing was created 5 years ago.. Got it..

You know I meant the tire pressure testing because of the hookless 5 bar limit which is just not enough for performance riding as in tt or tri. But this is exactly the answer that proves my point…

If you go back to the hookless is a scam thread, in chronological order

I jokingly said I was going to try it

Fredly said I could damage my wheel and void warranty

Eric stepped in and said he would do it

there was a lot of discussion about GP5000TT, that they were more problematic, trying to understand the reason why

questions were asked about the 5000TT, why it is a popular tire…..

All this by Sept 2nd

Here we are…

I am more than happy to try on Zipps, if they will cover it under warranty.

To be honest, the Conti Archetype is my new wide tire, low pressure friend.

As a giant fan of both of you, and as a long-time spectator of your little “tit for tat,'“ I think you do it to each other. I don’t think that is a one-way situation at all. I’m glad it is never going out of bounds or somebody would get suspended here :-)!

I dont think you have a point. How many CADEX Wheels have you sold? I think you are a dealer.

Serious question, lets say you do this and nothing happens. Although the tire would not be approved by the manufacturer, but it would hold, you ride in a an IM and it blows off. You crash and take 2 or 3 others with you, are you responsible for the damage? Can IM hold you responsible for it?
