about a year ago i realized that for the last 30 years i have been saying, “had dranken”,
example: “I bought it and had dranken it by the time i got to your house.”
this weekend my mom was visiting and pointed out it is not “heighth”.
this one i rationalize through its association with the word width…
and to top it off this morning at the parking lot of our group ride a little more aware of my tendencies i noticed and caught myself before saying “had boughten”…
my coworkers haggle me about it… wait till they hear about this mornings “catch”.
towards – the word is toward
supposably – the word is supposedly
CD’s – for plural add s, no apostrophe
mornings “catch”. – morning’s catch." apostrophe for possessive, close quote after period
people that think . . . – it’s people who think . . .
from whence it came – from is redundant
coworkers haggle me – if they want you to lower your price. Maybe they hassle you.
A local friend has a few idioms of her own that drive me nuts.
She says “somethink” for “something” - I mean, WTF, doesn’t she see that it sounds retarded? Why would she choose to mangle something so fundamental?
In the same vein, she says “grosheries” instead of groceries. This may be a New England thing, I dunno. It sounds retarded to me as well.
And she says “you know what I mean?” waaaaay too often, sometimes in the middle of a sentence. WELL NO SOMETIMES I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HELL YOU MEAN, AND I DON’T CARE FOR READING YOUR MIND. WHY DON’T YOU JUST BLURT IT OUT?!
What I don’t get is, this is a fully mature, smart, educated, well dressed, well groomed woman who aspires to culture. Why wouldn’t she polish her speech a she does her appearance? Frankly it’s a bit of a turn-off for me.
