Watch your heart - Incredible how some people are

I am getting to work this morning with my bottle of water (a little more than half galon) and this guy it’s outside smoking… he says:

  • Do you drink all that water?

  • Yes - I answered - I do a lot of running and biking, I drink this bottle during office hours, I do drink more before getting here and when I get home…

So he said something incredible:

  • You do running? Man, you have to watch your heart that is not very good…

And he sticks his cigarette in his mouth…

That’s some pretty potent stuff he’s smokin’.

Yup. Typical deal.

I got the same crap this morning from someone at work who said there was an article in today’s paper saying that running too much can kill you so I should stop exercising so much.

I gave him some totally made up BS about how in studies they found running is bad for the heart but cycling protects your heart from being damaged by running. Since I do triathlons I’m able to workout three times a day without the running killing me but I would put my health at risk if I ever stopped cycling.

He seemed to accept my scientific study and it shut him up so I don’t need to hear this “running kills” argument every day.

That’s great.

To the original topic - irony is wonderful, isnt’ it?

That reminds me of a time I got into an argument with this guy at work about exercise. His theory was “your heart only has so many beats in it and when you use them up you die”. Well I talked to him about the benefits of exercise and all the studies done that indicated it was good for your health. He still insisted on his theory. So I said, lets assume your theory IS correct. I asked him what his normal HR was (it was around 70) so I used it. Since he does absolutely nothing I said OK your number of heartbeats per day is: 70 x 60 x 24 = 100,800 beats/day.
Since I exercise, mine is:
At sleep: 8hr’s at RHR = 42 x 60 x 8 = 20,160 beats
Exercising: 3hr’s at HR = 140 x 60 x 3 = 25,200
Recovering: 6hr’s at HR = 70 x 60 x 6 = 25,200
Avg HR rest of day = 50 x 60 x 7 = 21,000
TOTAL = 91560 beats/day
So I showed him that just based on HIS theory alone, I would live 10% longer than him since he wasn’t exercising.
THAT SHUT HIM UP ONCE AND FOR ALL

Priceless … I wish I was that good at math. I knew having a low RHR had its benefits. You could also mention that he will likely die yonger anyway with a sedentary lifestyle, so you could actually live longer and still “use up” less heartbeats.

What, no sex?

4 minutes is negligible compared to 3 hrs of exercising and 6 hrs of recovery… and thats on a good day

What, no sex?

That’s what his 6 hours of recovery is every day

Four minutes? I didn’t realise you were going to do it twice!

His answer should have been:

"I don’t like exercise. To get that extra 10% of life, I must sacrifice 3/16 (18.75%) of my waking hours. This leaves me with a net loss of 8.75% of my life. Better off not exercising. "
