I got the same crap this morning from someone at work who said there was an article in today’s paper saying that running too much can kill you so I should stop exercising so much.
I gave him some totally made up BS about how in studies they found running is bad for the heart but cycling protects your heart from being damaged by running. Since I do triathlons I’m able to workout three times a day without the running killing me but I would put my health at risk if I ever stopped cycling.
He seemed to accept my scientific study and it shut him up so I don’t need to hear this “running kills” argument every day.
That reminds me of a time I got into an argument with this guy at work about exercise. His theory was “your heart only has so many beats in it and when you use them up you die”. Well I talked to him about the benefits of exercise and all the studies done that indicated it was good for your health. He still insisted on his theory. So I said, lets assume your theory IS correct. I asked him what his normal HR was (it was around 70) so I used it. Since he does absolutely nothing I said OK your number of heartbeats per day is: 70 x 60 x 24 = 100,800 beats/day.
Since I exercise, mine is:
At sleep: 8hr’s at RHR = 42 x 60 x 8 = 20,160 beats
Exercising: 3hr’s at HR = 140 x 60 x 3 = 25,200
Recovering: 6hr’s at HR = 70 x 60 x 6 = 25,200
Avg HR rest of day = 50 x 60 x 7 = 21,000
TOTAL = 91560 beats/day
So I showed him that just based on HIS theory alone, I would live 10% longer than him since he wasn’t exercising.
THAT SHUT HIM UP ONCE AND FOR ALL
Priceless … I wish I was that good at math. I knew having a low RHR had its benefits. You could also mention that he will likely die yonger anyway with a sedentary lifestyle, so you could actually live longer and still “use up” less heartbeats.
"I don’t like exercise. To get that extra 10% of life, I must sacrifice 3/16 (18.75%) of my waking hours. This leaves me with a net loss of 8.75% of my life. Better off not exercising. "
