I just did the Nankin Mills Duathlon here in Michigan. Damn. Last week I got second in my age category. This week 8th. And I went faster on the first run and on the bike. EIGHT! that sucks.
EVERY fast 40 year old was there: Sean Tyrrell (styrrell99 on this forum I believe), he is super fast. There were a ton of fast guys there.
Eric Fernando won (again) and Cheryl Klotkowski was 2nd.
I think I was about 14th or 15th overall and ony 8th in my age category. My time would have been top three in any of the other age categories. Pretty impressive field- either that or I am pretty damn slow. 5K run, 30K bike, 5K run in 1:31:38 by my watch.
She was flying outhere as she caught me just before entering T1 (while started in the second wave = 3 min. back) - I was quite surprised seeing her instead of Cheryl…
It was kinda funny for me on the 2nd run. I must have been told 4 times by spectators to “go catch Tom.” Didn’t quite make it though and finished right behind you. Fun race! Looking forward to Grosse Ille next weekend!
That was the craziest age div I’ve seen in a long time. I had what thought was a great time, only to crap myself when I saw the results. After I cleaned up I crapped again when I saw the penalty list. Not planning on Grosse Isle, but in has always been a great race.
Thanks for the complement. Man 40 -45 is going to be nasty in MI this year. I was 5th overall, less than 90s behind EFernando, and 4th in my age group. Problem is I know of three other fast dudes who weren’t their, Pete Bolen, T Harden, and the lawyer who name escapes me.
If I ever place 12th over all and don’t finish in the top ten in my age group I may take up golf.
Just kidding about it, but doesn’t the USCF allow older masters race in any younger age group they want to?

Yes! But in some states (like Texas) it seems as though some of the cat 3/4 guys who are now racing masters, seem to get a little distraugh over that fact that some of us 40+ former cat 1/2’s are now racing masters instead of continuing to contest the pro/1/2 events?
That race was crazy fast, and you more experienced athletes are getting faster with each succeeding year. Only 2 guys out of the top 10 were under 40! :-0 That 43 yo Canuck, Jaime Kasurak, had me worried. He put 36 seconds on me during the first run, and it took almost the entire bike for me to catch him. With only 8 seconds in hand coming off the bike, I figured I was doomed. I put some time on him and Pat Carroll in transition and ran like a scared rabbit the whole way. Good thing my new aero bars are going to be good for a couple minutes on the bike, right?
I was there, too, although way behind you fast guys. It’s good to know that if I ever shave, say, 20 minutes off my total time I COULD be close to placing at a ‘normal’ race. I mean, c’mon, how hard can it be to drop 1/6 of my total time…I should be able to do that by Saturday, right?
Damn, somehow I have to figure out a way to be about 1 minute faster on the first run, three minutes faster on the second run and a mile per hour faster on the bike…
Not gonna happen this week.
I just got the entry list for Grosse Ile. I am in for another trouncing in my age category this weekend.
Yeah, I muffed T1. this was my first time on my Tri bike in about 8 months. I leave my shoes on the pedals and kicked one off with it barely on my foot. It took forever to get it on.
It was a fun race and a well run event. I was also amazed by how many fast people there were in such a small field of 170 or so people. I was surprised by the number of penalties handed out. I know the rules but come on. Two minutes for mounting before the line. Of course I received one and it knocked me out of the top 20 overall.
