art, i hate to put it this way, but i just don’t like you. there’s almost no one i don’t like. the reason i don’t spend time over here is largely you. you’re just so danged disagreeable.
i LOVE to be challenged intellectually. i love to have my mind changed. but nobody likes to be brow beaten, and that’s what you do. when people like me stop engaging with you in a debate, it’s not because you win and we run out of arguments. it’s because it’s just not one’s idea of how to spend meaningful time.

Perhaps that might shed more light on what Art calls Kerry’s “passionate” lying. But of course, Art “knows” Kerry was lying, so this isn’t much of a discussion.
On the other hand, I’m sure there will be Republicans who will then argue that Kerry’s unwillingness to engage on a subject that would dignify the attacks in the first place as evidence that he didn’t have the mettle to be President, which today apparently is defined as being able to do a photo-op on a carrier and tell insurgents to “bring it on” when he didn’t have any skin in the game. I guess that’s leadership today.

i’ve never known you to be a thoughtful debater over here. smart, clever, but not really interested in the other person, you know, as a person.
at base, when i discuss things, the end result is that one person sways the other with an argument, or both sides go away without any headway being made. but when we go away, we go away friends. we go have an espresso. we… do whatever. there is a ballast to the relationship that weighs a lot more than the disagreement.
that’s my requirement for a discussion… a foundation of goodwill. i’ve never gotten that from you. over in the other forum, i might disagree with somebody over whether carbon or ti is the best material, but in the end it’s two men walking away, two triathletes, two americans, two humans.
i don’t really differentiate between online or in-person. i’d say i’m pretty seamless. i’d be just as likely to be nice or nasty (based on what i get back) in person as online. so, this paradigm of really, really nice guys (in person) being severe assholes online, that doesn’t wash with me.

Slowman has played the clever hand of steering the debate issue away from the actual debate by personalizing it…making it an indictment of your character.

Debating an issue is not about how a person expresses interest in his opponent, debating the issue is about the issue. As soon as your mind becomes clouded with the subtleties of decorum or ‘behavior’ and concern for your opponents self esteem, you will lose your killer instinct and you will fail to get your message across. Understand; your objective in debating an issue is to shred your opponent, there is a reversal of this rule on certain occasions but primarily, you want to make your opponent look like a fool.

These comments are a stealth attempt to break your spirit and lay a massive guilt trip on you. Slowman is trying to get inside your head!!
If you might begin to second guess yourself by becoming more objective and sensitive in your comments in the LR, I would discourage that. If you are accused of being an asshole, sometimes the best response is to become more of an asshole. In other words, ‘problems created by audacity are easily corrected with more audacity.’

Evidently Kerry was stupid enough to think that the American people would see through such a transparent attempt to baselessly defame his service through the use of a newly formed proxy group created by political operatives. Evidently he was wrong. He made a decision to ignore them, thinking they’d go away and responding would dignify their existence. He apparently didn’t factor in Fox News, which is more than happy to run stories without verification and investigation, especially if they serve an interest, because as they say, they report, you decide. They were just more than happy to keep reporting, figuring that people would decide if it was hammered into them enough times.

You have the right to dislike anyone you want for any reason, but as is relatively common, I find your stated reasons entirely bogus. Art is not a bully, and he is not demeaning. I can’t think of any regular in here who’s a worse fit for that description than Art. He is almost unfailingly polite and respectful of others in here, even after some pretty rotten personal comments leveled at him from time to time.

Yesterday, he called me a hypocrite for absolutely no reason, saying I blamed Bush for something but refused to get pulled into a discussion of whether FDR was a war criminal, when in fact I never mentioned Bush and indicated that I was apolitical when it came to holding the Administration (of any party) responsible.
Art has made up his mind about the SBVs, and refuses to consider the evidence against their claims.
