Wariner's running form

Jeremy Wariner is a sprinter, but he appears to be less muscular than the typical 400m participant. He looks more like a middle distance runner. Any thoughts on his apparently effortless running form?

He doesn’t have the all out top end speed of the 100m and 200m sprinters, but at the 400m he is king.

There has been talk of him moving up to middle distance events.

Looks good.

Imma steal his DNA and replace my own with it

Just the running parts tho. sweet.

My thought is that “apparently effortless” is a really poor way to look at that. That man is working his ass off. Check out the slow mo at the 4 min mark of the first video. his face is contorted and he’s clenching up his upper body and hands. He’s slowing down less than the other guys, but he’s still fading. Also look at him after the finish.

Smooth and fluid seems to be a better way to describe him. He’s the best in the world and “only” about a half second off MJ’s record.

A long time ago, I was “only” about a half second or so behind the slower guys in that race. At those speeds, nothing is “effortless”. It’s damn hard work, but if you’re smooth like he is it’s more efficient.

As for being a less than archetypal quarter miler, perhaps we should review the model. Before him everyone talked about how Johnson was so out of the mold. He ran bolt upright, even leaned back, and was a piston instead of a loper like Wariner, Alvin and Calvin, etc. are (JW being closer to the model 400m man before the influx of jacked sprinters (like Butch Reynolds) moving up from the 200 over the last 20 years or so).

As an aged one and two lap cat myself, one_lap is dead on. The 400m is a special kind pain/effort. It’s about dialing in a geometry or posture that optimizes the inevitable fade.

I also agree that Mr. Wariner is closer to the archetypal one lapper than not.
