the lead time is about 3-6 months depending on what else andy has going on. i’ve imported a couple for various athletes. give me a shout senorjerk@yahoo.com
you can also contact andy directly at www.walser-cycles.ch
they are not cheap. we just wired andy close to 11,000 bucks for frame, fork, hbars, cranks and two rear wheels. the bikes are super slick though…super narrow proprietary bb and crank assembly for the lowest q factor ever…100mm rear hub spacing…of course if you are under sponsership arrangments which prevent you from using walser cranks and wheels more generic arrangements are availble.
I’m not in a huge hurry. But 11,000 for the basics minus components is getting a bit out of what I can afford, especially if my move to a simpler lifestyle falls into place this winter.
If you can wait and have the $$$, a Walser can be yours.
You can’t get it without the handlebars, which cost around $700 USD, or the brake levers, for about $200. Some of the UCI-illegal models are a bit cheaper, but you DO have to figure in customs and shipping, which can add a LOT more money. Clearcoat (which includes a purtying up of the cosmetic layer) costs about $300. I would wait until the Euro becomes more in line with the USD.
Figure about $10,000 USD for some models with components of your choice.
If you are going to even consider something like this, you need to commit to your fitness and have your bike position refined to the point of no more refining. Bikes like this are built for your weight, and one really can’t deviate much like you can with off-the-peg models (in steel, ti, or aluminium, anyway).
I am not trying to discourage you, but nothing would be worse than to find that your new pride and joy will be worthless to you if your fitness improves/declines or you get a new position that requires a new top tube length.
With all the complexities that go into an order like this I think I will indeed wait until my fitness is a little more deserving. I’ve reached high points of fitness, but right now am in a trough. I want to learn how to reach a higher level and sustain that level for at least 12-18 months before considering dropping $10,000 on a custom bike that if I deviate won’t be unable to be ridden.
If you get a Walser you will be a SlowTwtch god!
The only way to get any cooler than that would be for you to buy me one. I’d review it. Then I’d give you the go ahead to buy one for yourself. MMmmmmm, walser.
You are correct on the price, but by the time you get it with the handlebars, the clear coat, and good components, as well as shipping and customs, you would be just a few ticks away from about $10,000 USD. You won’t be putting Centaur or 105 on there, nor will you put on Alex wheels for anything but training.
Customs on something like a $3400 frame is pretty steep, as well as shipping from Sui is somewhere in the neighbourhood of about $250. You have to insure the shipment, as well for another $100 or so. You probably would not get the frame to your door for under $5000, and that would be the painted one.
I added up an example of the Walser you mention with handlebars, clear coat, and brake levers, it would cost about $4100 (I just converted the rough estimates on xe.com- $1 USD buys .87 Euros). Do customs, shipping and insurance and it would get very near the $5000 mark. Put on components deserving of this machine and you’re a few ticks under $10,000. Okay about $8000, depeding on wheel choice, which over-the-top crank and bottom bracket you buy, etc., etc.
I was thinking of getting a Walser as well, but the price and wait that you quote is scaring me off!
I thought tt the model 5 that works with standard cranks and bb costs 2830 euro (about $3400).
There are at least two versions of the model 5, the standard model frame is 2830 Euro (standard bottom bracket etc.), the “thin” version frame is 3350 euro. Naturally the “thin” version needs special parts, so it’s goning to end up a lot more expensive.
The keyword Walser tends to generate endless, very heated discussions, on www.3athlon.de.
