Dan the Man Empfield 5th in M45-49.
Great race Dan; we’re proud of you! Especially that run split.
Do you happen to have a genuinely talented runner nearby that you rely on for coaching?

I feel betrayed, I thought he was one of us. He’ll have to change his name to Fastman.
Well, if he hadn’t of taken a vacation in the transitions, he’d have been 3rd!
yeah…and montyman WINS the 45-49 AG…great race MARK MONTGOMERY…

I was wondering about that – maybe the old guy needed a nap after the swim. Or maybe he couldn’t get his T1 off…
This guy passed me on Nasty Grade like I was standing still. Here I am thinking I was a pretty decent climber, but Dan, with his self described “legs of an accountant” couldn’t have looked more comfortable. I am seriously thinking of getting FISTed so my next ride up that hill can be as nice as his. BTW, the HED aerobars look much better with the gunk cleaned off…
Thanks for the kind words. It was a tough day for all, but that is what it is all about. My first race back after the heart surgery and I think that I will be able to keep improving. Two guys from Valyermo in the top five, maybe you all should come up and see what’s going on up here…

you’ve got a point. but i’d have been 33rd without all the clothes i put on. plus, i ascribe to the view that it actually may’ve helped paula, luc, etc., to have to sit in kona’s sin bin. extrapolating on that theme, i just pretend i’ve gotten a penalty, except i get to change clothes during my incarceration.
Do yourselves a favor, and DO check out what’s going on up at Valyermo. The folks up there have quietly set up training nirvana for themselves, and are in the process of kicking their own and select visiting asses into ridiculous shape.
I just spent a week with Dan, Mark, John, a bunch of bike shop guys, 500 dogs, one cat, a visiting rattlesnake, and the mellifluous tones of the local coyotes, and after recovering from all of that, I have this to say: if you ever have the chance to visit Xantusia, whether as part of the FIST workshop, or as an attendee at the hopefully-someday-soon training camps Dan is talking about - GO!!
7000 feet of climbing (on the bike) in less than 4 hours. Where else can you do that 5 minutes ride from the front door?

Hey Monty,
I’m a little slow, so I’ve just put 2 and 2 together here, but I think we met in the line waiting for the shuttle after the race. I was the one with the Trek OCLV and the Neverreach bottle (and the very good-natured wife that had been standing in the rain all day). Anyway- congratulations on the race- that’s awesome! It was nice meeting you.

Monty? You must be the same Monty that I heard a fan of yours cheering you on in T1. I kept hearing this guy say "go monty,,you're the man!" I looked over and it was none other than Bob Babbit. He looked at me and replied "that guy's my hero, he's got a pace maker and still out here in the middle of it doing great!,,,he's a walking celebration to us all." That was all the inspiration I needed. The rest of the day was sunny and dry.
