Volume in the off season

regarding running and biking, if my next race is my first Olympic distance race and is in June of 2010 I guess I would consider september through January my “off” season. I just completed my first sprint distance Tri a few weeks ago and am very proud of my results for a first timer @ 41 years of age (though I did train hard for seven months prior). I want to get a head start on next years competetion. Should I concentrate strictly on increasing my volumes at an easy pace and stay away from power and race tempo or still throw that in with the volume work and how often, once a week, every other week, once a month??? Appreciate any thoughts…

I started that post and got very good input. Do check out the links from Barry P. He talks about the increase of distance. I think it will also help in a plan to increase your offseason base. I have been doing it for about a month and have definitely noticed an improvement. Now I need to do it for 4 more months!!
