Vittoria Open Triathlon EVO vs. Open Corsa EVO CX

I want to go ahead and replace them now and put some miles on my new tires before the race.

I recommend that you put about five miles on your new tires before the race.
.

Ah - only a few miles? No more testing than that?

What do you want to test?

Lol - good point I suppose. I did get a bad tire once, one of the beads was slightly too large and it would cause pinch flats with the tiniest bumps in the road, like every 15 to 50 miles before the bead finally failed all together. At first I thought it was just a string of bad luck that I had four flats in four rides (okay - so maybe I’m not that quick).

But I guess your bigger point is that a brand new tire performs better than one with say 200 miles on it?

No.

A tire that has 200 miles on it is likely to have a few small cuts in it. A new tire doesn’t have any cuts.

I disagree. I think you should put 5.3 miles on your tires.

I am gonna bring this back up… Now has anyone had any experience with the tires? Considering getting one for the rear and wondering if there are any more thoughts on this. I currently run a corsa cx…

My experience with the EVO CX is terrible wet grip, which seems to be somewhat backed up by some semi objective tests of wet grip. But then other people think they have fabulous wet grip. So, who knows, difficult thing to quantify.

The Triathlon tire has a smooth tread and thus should have better grip than the CX, wet or dry.

Both tires are pretty delicate, not a problem if you use clinchers and keep fresh tires on for race day. With tubulars it can be expensive as you have to replace them often if you want to run newer, safer tires on race day.

Also these tires are not very aero, which is somewhat important on the front wheel.

CRR is excellent though, and CRR being excellent is very very good.

I am looking at it for a rear only tire (I run HED 3 front so i have a 20 mm conti on it) so with that being said, any noticeable (or important, but not so noticeable) speed difference for a single rear do we think? I am doing all flat course, little to no turning triathlons this year so not that concerned about grip

fragile tires… thx but no thx

possibly, what rear tire are you using now?

Why not?
A fragile tire has hardly any more chance of flatting in 112 miles than a durable one as long as it is new and not worn.

Of course it depends on road conditions and goals. This is why I love clinchers, you could show up with a super fast tire like the vittoria, or turbo cotton, or supersonic, and if you realize it will be raining and lots of chip seal the day before, swap on a 4000S instead.

i haven’t been able to finish a ride on those tires without a flat; I did race battenkill TWICE on the same set of 4000s without a problem; I do agree on taking chances in shorter TTs and stuff like that tho.

As a counter anecdote, I haven’t flatted an EVO CX over thousands of miles of racing until a couple days ago on a set of rollers of all things. And that was a well worn tire at velodrome + a looser rim fit = the tire was walking on the rollers and stretched the tube at the valve. In other words not exactly a tire failure.

Different folk are going to have different flatting experiences.

Clincher tire is the same, just smaller with smooth tread. I think the tubular has a butyl tube.

They don’t like busted glass at all, but that is true of all the “open tubulars” I’ve used. Conti tires do a much better job of resisting glass.

Just to add i used EVO CX clinchers for 4 years of tri racing and never had a flat, now on my third road racing season i use the tubular version and have never flatted as well. Overall that is around 7-8k miles of racing and never a flat. I also think they grip very well in wet conditions (best might be FMB comp or Veloflex road tubular). The huge downside is that they cut easily, even in new condition any gravel or crack in the road can cut them up. Right now i have a pair with 300 miles of road racing and the rear tire has 9 2-3mm cuts…but no flat yet. Once they get to 400-450 they are at their limit for racing in my opinion. A lot of people who flat them think they can ride them to 1k miles but it just will not happen with a very high end tubie.

What is a good upper limit on use for an evo cx?

I have a set with about 400k, race only about 3 years old, no cuts. Never had a flat.

Better to race on a new one (4k tops)

In a similar train of thought . What is the expected life of a latex tube? I have a lot purchased together 2 years ago. 2 have about 100k racing sprints, and otherwise hanging out under my race rubber on the race wheel, or sitting on the shelf in the box. Still good for racing?

I’ve used the 23c CX III, 22c SL, and now the 24c Turbo Cotton full-time. I had great experience with the CX IIIs on a standard rim, way too many flats on the SLs with a wide rim, and pretty good experience so far with the Turbo Cotton. Tom A.'s crr results speak for itself. More intangibly, I had a lot less trouble putting on the Turbo Cotton tires than either of the Corsas.

Can you post a link to those results?
