Vineman full - who's in?

this will be my first iron distance, so i’m expecting a pr in all legs, and overall  seriously, not enough training, not expecting much except to finish. who else is in?

I’m in, second time trying this race and this distance. In 2008 I got to mile 15 of the marathon before pulling out and spending about 4 hours in medical. Hoping for better pacing and nutrition this time. And cooler weather if possible, but I’m better prepared regardless. Coming from Durango, CO, so I have that altitude thing in me too.

I’m in! This will be my 5th IM and I’m hoping to finally put all the pieces together and execute a well paced race. I’ve done quite a bit of online recon and the race looks pretty sweet. The bike course looks pretty straight forward, possibly a few steepish short hills and then Chalk Hill. Any other major surprises?

No major surprises except that hills on the run are far more important than the hills on the bike.
Have a blast. That race kicks butt.

don’t drink the water on the swim.

IN … but I’m announcing  … and the water quality is just fine!

See ya’ll in two weeks!

Dave,

I did the race in 2008 and it was (for me at least) blisteringly hot that day, mid-90’s starting the marathon. I’ve been trying to prepare for that this time, but following the weather the last few weeks it seems like its been the opposite in Windsor, foggy, cool and overcast. I know you can’t predict 2 weeks out, but what would you say is typical for the Full over the years it has been held: Weather like 2008 or like you’ve seen this year to date?

We can have relatively large temperature swings here depending on how we are effected by the marine layer / coastal influence … 10 days ago we were forecasted for 100 degree’s for this weekends 70.s … it’s going to be low 80’s for a HIGH and it’s going to be marine layer and chilly @ start time

SO … if it’s avg we are looking at mid to upper 80’s for a high with very cool mornings (w/ marine layer) and cool evenings

Right now the forecast fot he Full VM is hot … BUT i;d rather see that forecast now since two weeks around here is a long time and it tends to change. I encourage athletes to prepare for the heat and if we don’t have it then it’s easy to deal with.

See you in two weeks …

DL

I don’t post much here, but I’m in. My 3rd iron-distance. Coming from Kansas.

Probably doing sleeveless wetsuit unless the water temps seriously dip between now and then.
I’m bringing arm warmers for the start of the bike and cool wings for the run - which seems strange.

I’m in. First full distance for me as well. My biggest fear is the heat.

I’m in. Anyone planning on going under 9:30 and picking up some cash?

Water temp this morning was 69 degrees
.

I’m racing. It will also be my first full. Planning to go around 12:30. My most recent half was back in May at 5:47. Any thoughts on what cassette to use? Right now I have a 50/34 up front and the option of a 12-25 or 11-28 in the rear. To me it looks flat enough for a 12-25 with the exception of a couple hills.

You definitely don’t need a 28 if you are running compacts. The only hill of any significance is Chalk Hill and is about 400’. Honestly if I were running compacts (which I do on my road bike but not TT bike) I would want an 11- something for that course. I live mile and half from bottom of Chalk Hill and am either running or biking that hill every week. Although it suddenly gets steeper on your second lap of the full IM, it still isn’t much of a hill really. Good luck and have fun!

As for surprises -

Depending on the river bottom, don’t be surprised to see people walking part of the swim or at least hitting your finger tips.

Does it make sense to run a disk? I know its a bit faster and all but with the roads being in such bad shape I may just run the 404s

I am planning on racing with my wheel builder disc cover on my open pros. However, I don’t have the option of running a 404. The course isn’t too hilly minus so the weight penalty shouldn’t be too bad. Also I hear that the back half of the course as you head south towards windsor can have a decent (5-10mph) headwind. This also looks to be in line with the current weather report

thanks, just set up my disk for Sat. Had to change cassette, break pads and one of my spare tubes.
Always a bit of a hustle. Good luck Saturday

I was supposed to be there for the full Aquabike but a case of epididymitis squashed that. Good luck to all!

I was in and actually finished yesterday. I’ll post a experience when I get back home this week. It was an eventful day…
