Vineman - directions from San Jose Airport?

I’m flying into San Jose Airport to meet up with my wife who is working in that area. The online mapping sites are recommending a route that takes me through San Francisco. Does that sound like the most optimal route?

I get in around noon on Friday. I know traffic sucks, but I don’t want to add to it by going through the city if I don’t need to.

Sounds about right… Enjoy the bridge - should be fun! Is it recommending 280 or 101?

The only two short ways to get there involve either taking 101 all the way through the city (it’s only about three miles of city streets in the city) or taking 880 on the other side of the bay up to 580 to 101. If you get to the city before rush hour starts you should be OK. Some folks take 280 to 19th to 101 but I find this only works the other way in the afternoons.

This Friday? The San Jose Grand Prix (car race in downtown San Jose) starts having stuff happening this Friday at about 10:00.

SJO to SF via 280.

When 280 splits off, don’t take it, but instead take 19th Avenue and up through Golden Gate Park and it will dump you out right onto the Golden Gate Bridge.

101 straight up to SR.

Going through SF will be way faster than going over via Oakland. You have to come back to that side of the bay anyway.

And besides…getting through SF will be a breeze. Wait until you hit north Marin County/southern Sonoma! You’ll be going 10 mph if you’re lucky.
