Vineman 70.3 RR: Car 1, Me 0

Kylie and I are signed up for IM Kentucky as our A race for the season. I scheduled Vineman 70.3 as part of our build towards IMKY, and as a second opportunity to qualify for Kona.

Based on my training my time goals for this race were 27 swim, 2:25 bike and 1:25 run.

I only scheduled a half day of patients Friday so we could leave at lunch time and drive to the Bay area. We made good time and stayed with Kylies mom that night. Saturday night we stayed with her dad at a cabin they have at Oddfellows campground on the Russian River four miles from the race start.

On race morning we drove the short drive down to the start and were pleased to get parking only a block from the start.

I saw Kylie off to the start of her race as her wave left 32 minutes before mine. Did a short warmup below the dam and then lined up front and center of my wave. When the horn went off I swam hard for a couple hundred yards then settled in behind a guy that was swimming the same pace as I was. I saw one other guy get away from us right away but was pleasantly surprised that we were holding second and third place in our wave. The guy I swam with was navigating perfectly so I was content to draft off him. At one point I turned over to back stroke and saw that we had gotten quite a gap over the rest of the wave. At the turn around he let me by and I pulled us back to the swim finish. (SWIM 27:27)

I had a pretty good transition and was off onto the bike. (T1 1:17)

I felt great on the bike and had to keep holding myself back at the beginning. I passed the guy that led our wave out of the water at about mile 4 or 5. The road was pretty crowded for the next ten miles or so before things began to thin out. I felt I was riding very strong, still holding myself back but was waiting to get caught. By mile 30 I was getting very excited because the run is my best event and I have not led my age group on the bike in a race of this size for over ten years. Around mile 35 two guys from my age group caught me, I went back and forth with them until mile 50 before I let them go but kept them in sight and within 15” and 30” respectively.

About a mile from the finish on a fast straighaway I was traveling at approximately 25mph when a car made a u-turn on the course and struck me. I was taken by ambulance to Sutter hospital where I was examined and xrayed. Fortunately nothing was broken, but I have some severe road rash, contusions and swelling all along my right side. As expected I am even stiffer today and will take my recovery day by day. Luckily I was able to find someone on short notice to treat my patients for a couple days.

Looking over the results today I saw that the athlete that was 15" ahead of me won our age group with a 1:28 run. If I had stayed 15" behind him to the bike finish I would have ridden 2:22 which would have been my best 1/2 IM bike since I went 2:24 at the Peterborough 1/2 IM in 1998. Kind of bittersweet to know that I have gotten my fitness back to a level where I am right there for a Kona slot, but that it did not happen on the day.

I hope that I will be able to compete at IMKY but am not holdng my breath and am focused on healing as quickly as possible, and the race would just be a bonus.

On a more positive note, Kylie did 5:54 - a 1 hour and 24 minute PB over the half ironman distance! Her race report is here. (Warning - LONG)

You have the right attitude.

While I wasn’t hit by a car (YIKES!), I crashed my bike 5 weeks prior to IMLP - aero, going downhill - front flat at bottom of hill prior to left hand turn - didn’t make the turn and smacked into the curb and dirt embankment. We can swap gory pics.

The worst part wasn’t the flesh wounds but the fact I strained some abductor muscles when I fell off. While I actually biked home that day and rode a bunch the next few days, walking was very uncomfortable and running wasn’t an option. To shorten this story… I didn’t run for almost 2 weeks and the first time I ran I struggled to run 1 mile in 20 minutes. I still have some small areas were the contusion hasn’t fully subsided - my wounds and groin DID heal, I didn’t lose massive amounts of fitness - end result - PR’d at LP and got my first ticket to Kona.

Be patient, keep that attitude and buy those Tegarderm (sp?) bandages.

I look forward to your next race report.

Paul

Glad you weren’t hurt any worse.

The link to the race report doesn’t work.

Hey Mike –

Good to hear that you are okay. As you know, you’ll be even stiffer today than yesterday. The good news is how much better you will feel in a week // and the huge jump you’ll make the week after that. When I am first injured, or forced to stop training, full recovery seems far away. However, once recovered, review of the situation is seldom as rough as those first 48hrs. By adopting the later mindset from the get go, the initial down time easier and keeps the mind positive. Be a smart a patient!

Michael
Sorry about your race. Glad you were not hurt worse. Get better soon.

Good luck

What terrible news! It could have been much worse, but what a scare!! Heal up quick, Mike.

Yeah, it’s in a blog and that site seems to be down. It should be back soon.

Hey Mike

Glad to hear you are relatively ok. I went past you shortly after it happened and it looked pretty scary to see you laying out on that road. I happened to ride by the exact spot this morning on a recovery ride and was looking for some brake marks or something but other than a bit of glass or perhaps plastic on the road, didn’t see anything.

That really sucks about your race, but honestly when I saw that chopper there and you covered up in blankets in that other lane I feared someone was seriously hurt or worse. Maybe you need to go see a DC?

Good News to hear that you are doing better. I never saw you as i went last wave. But my friend went early on and he said he saw you laid out and you didn’t look good. Glad to see you are doing better.

Also i saw some one taken in an ambulance at the little under pass at mile 5 when you go under river road. I almost hit the ambulance and the fire truck. But like i said i went last wave.

I swear, someone bites it there nearly every year. Probably people who don’t go to the meeting or drive the course.

Funniest sight of the day was the guy who was riding with his running shoes strapped to his back. Maybe he missed the meeting or didn’t read the website or get the race info flyer?

Thank you everyone,

I really appreciate all your concern and well wishes. It is one of the great things about a forum like this. I would also like to repeat my sincerest thanks to anyone who was involved in helping me in anyway on Sunday.

As an update. I am even stiffer in a number of areas, and the contusions are really coming to the surface along my right side today. However, I am focused on being a “good patient” and am replacing training with treating my injuries. I am looking for those Tagaderm bandages but no luck so far. In the mean time I am using an antibiotic ointment and large sized non stick banadages. Using lots of ice to keep the swelling down and went to the office today to get treated as well.

Unfortunately, while going over my bike today, I found cracks in the top tube of the frame, handlebars and the zipp 999’s. :frowning:
But definately better in those than in me.

One example – most medical supply services have the dressing.

ROCK ON!
