Vineman 70.3 Race Report

This was my 9th year in a row to do the race and I’ve ridden up there for about 15 years, so I know the course like the back of my hand. And I always know lots and lots of people racing and my tri club has an aid staion, which makes it fun.

Swim 00:40:46.0 (my watch said sub-40)
T1 00:06:28.8
Bike 03:18:30.1 (includes a stop at an aid station–my computer had 3:06 riding time)
T2 00:06:10.5
Run 02:54:26.0
Finish 07:06:21.4

What I did wrong: Didn’t plan my nutrition very well, both breakfast and race. Started too far back on the swim. Mentally checked out the second half of the run (partially due to the mindset of it being a “training day” and I didn’t want to bury myself with two more weeks of training to go before the big race). Didn’t pre-lube my run socks. Didn’t have electrolytes in a good carry bag so they disintegrated after I had two of them.

What I did right: Rode right on the edge, not hammering, but able to run right off the bike. Tried to do the swim and bike at what I thought might be IM effort.

Swim: I started clear in the back and even though the wave wasn’t huge (all women +45), I had to swim through quite a few ladies in the first quarter mile. I wasn’t swimming “hard”, but tried to swim steady and do a better job of sighting (which I did for about 75% of the swim). The water temps were borderline and since it was a little overcast at the start, I wore my wetsuit. I really would have preferred a sleeveless suit since I did get a little hot (which maybe was an issue later?)

T1: Took my time and packed up my crap . It was crowded when I got out of the pen, so I walked the bike up the hill. (Once over the timing matt and mount line, it’s an immediate short but steep enough hill. Easy enough to hop on and ride unless it’s crowded and people are weaving all over.)

Bike: The first five miles on River Road I always take fairly easy where most people start hammering along since it’s flat. Made the turn off and up the short but steep hill and then onto the beginning of the rollers. Once we got over Canyon Road and in the Alexander Valley on Hwy. 128, I was flying. I love this part of the course since it’s mostly flat and I move right along. With the new disc wheel, at times I swear I was getting “lift” from the bike! Stopped at the aid station at mile 30-something for the bathroom. Figured it was a training day, so why rush.

The rest of 128 was great! It was then onto Chalk Hill Road and the lead up to Chalk Hill. Rode this pretty good. It wasn’t too windy and wasn’t overly hot (though I do like hot on the bike). Riding up Chalk Hill I was slow, but it wasn’t as hard as usual. I know that in two weeks, the second time up in the afternoon will not be fun! Coming down off Chalk Hill and onto the little rollers the rest of the way, I was again flying. Once you come down off Chalk Hill and across the flats, there is a short, steep uphill and 90 degree left turn and this guy passes me and says, “You are a bullet train on the downhills!” Now if I were a bullet train all the time! The last few miles I dialed it back a little and tried to spin out my legs. Got to T2 and when I got off my bike, my speedo said 3:06. Pretty happy with that as I think the fastest I’ve ridden the course in the past was 3:12.

T2: Long! Not sure where they measure from, but again, I took my time and it was pretty darned hot by this time.

Run: Hot and sunny but I was running ok. Walked through the first aid station and started running again. Same at the second aid station. Between that aid station and #3, there is a short, steep hill so I walked up it, but started running again. After that there are rollers, but after aid #3, it flattens out for about half a mile, but that stretch is in the baking sun and I was really getting hot. Then there is another bigger, steeper hill which nearly everyone was walking. After that is my tri club’s aid station, so that was nice to see everyone. Didn’t linger (which is easy to do) and right after this, you hit 3 miles of no shade. Along here I find that my electrolytes are dust and I’m getting hotter and hotter and start to walk a little more. I get out to La Crema (mile 6) and do the loop around the vineyard and coming out of it to the aid station, they are out of Coke. As is the next aid station. And the next, and the next and the next. So, I drank only water because every time I try Gatorade, I immediately get a serious pain in my stomach. Things went bleh and I was hot and irritated and started walking more. In the back of my mind was, “it’s just a training day”. There was never any consideration that I would not finish, but at this point, I didn’t really care about the time. Also, after about mile 8, my quads and calves started twinging every once in a while. At one point you step up onto a curb to the sidewalk from the road and my whole leg about seized up. Shook it out and kept going. With about a mile to go, I tried to pick it up and ran the rest of the way in (except for the curb incident).

Once across the finish line I had to sit down right there and they kept putting cold sponges over my head. After about 10 minutes of sitting and cold water on my head, I was starting to feel better so I got my medal and walked around and got out of my shoes and had some food and a cold shower.

So, I’m somewhat disappointed in my time, but in adding up my hours this morning, I had over 18 hours of training last week, including a 3 hour ride on Saturday, so I guess it was a good training day and hopefully it won’t be that hot for the full Vineman.

Great to see so many STers there and meet some new folks!

PR’ing on the bike the day AFTER a 3 hr ride sounds pretty awesome to me. Sounds like you’re ready. ATTAGIRL!

I think the PR on the bike is almost entirely due to your excellent choice in company for dinner the night before the race!

Congratulations on a very solid race! You keep amazing me with your strong racing month after month. You did Brazil and planning another IM in a few weeks and then this incredible day too in the middle of all that!! You are just so strong. Way to go!

Thanks Dawn and Michael!!

And TriCeratops==Yes, dinner with woo and weaselgrl is probably what contributed to my race. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Nice to see you again!

Great race Cathy, you looked strong when I passed you on the bike.
Good luck at the full Vineman in 2 weeks.

Cathy,

I realize this is way off topic, but I knowing you have done Kona and Alcatraz, how do the swim conditions compare? Alcatraz is the only ocean swim I have ever done and I had a blast. I’m doing Kona this year and have no idea what to expect.

Brent

wow great day to follow that 3 hour ride! You were moving well when I saw you.

Hey Brent–I’ve never done Alcatraz. Hate cold water!! I loved the Kona swim, but I like no wetsuit and warm water. Even though I wasn’t on the pointy end of the field, I was surrounded the entire time and it was a pretty easy swim.

Thanks Mike and Kylie!! Mike–heal quickly!

Well it was hot on the run but could have been worse…Monday it hit 100 in Windsor with a nasty north east wind. Kind of our version of Santa Ana winds… I think I passed you on the bike. Looks like you painted your P2k, no? I was on a Lucero and said hi but you sort of just looked at me like “who the hell is that guy”?

Kona and Alcatraz, how do the swim conditions compare?

Other than the salt water, there’s not much that’s the same with these two swims. Currents are more of an issue with Alcatraz, as you have to be very aware of your line lest you end up swimming out the Golden Gate (okay, a little bit exaggerated but not by much)…very cold water (though you are in a wetsuit) for Alcatraz, very warm and no wetsuit for Kona. There can be and have been issues with the current in Kona, but I think again that it’s not as critical of an issue in terms of keeping one on course there versus Alcatraz.

Chop can be an issue with both, though again I would say more so with Alcatraz than with Kona…both will require good sighting skills.

Both are pretty awesome swims, I will say that…Kona just for being Kona, and the absolutely crystal clear water, seeing the bottom of the bay, seeing fish…Alcatraz for being in between the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge, for the legend, for the way you can’t see more than a couple feet in front of you in the water, for being so damn cold, and for using the skyline (parts of it, anyway) as your sight line.

Congrats on the race, Cathy…nice ride—looks like you’re getting stronger and stronger there!

Good luck at Full VM…

Thanks!!

You riding this weekend? I’ll be at Del Valle for the swim on Saturday. Thinking of staying the weekend for some heat training.

100F! Well get it over with this week please!

Yeah, custom painted P2K…sorry to not recognize you. I was in a zone on the bike for sure!

Do you know of this place? The room was cheaper than the HI Express.

You riding this weekend?

Nope, this is turning into an “off year” for me battling some old injuries…so focusing just on the run for now, trying to get some of that old mojo back for next year. So it’ll just be you and the rest of the L-Town gang!

Speaking of heat, it felt like friggin’ Hawaii without the aroma yesterday…ran at 5:30 pm and it was like 90+ degrees with a mugh higher than normal humidity—took me an hour after the run to stop sweating…so you should be able to get some good heat work in this weekend!

It is located on Old Red just north of Eastside Rd. Honestly I have never visited it but if it is cheaper than HI Express it has to better. At least it is not right on the freeway.

They are actually building two new hotels in Windsor. One is a Hilton just off Airport Blvd and the other is a Hampton Inn accross from Mary’s…you may have noticed the construction going on. The Hilton should be done in a few months and is pretty large.

Hi Cathy, good race. I saw you on the bike course but it didn’t click until I was already past. That paint scheme looks really good. Thanks for the tips on training for Hawaii. Brian and I had plenty of time to talk about it on our way to spend the night in Santa Cruz. Took us three hours to get from Santa Rosa to the other side of the Golden Gate! I thought our So. Cal traffic was bad but no. Anyway, great report and good race to you. I was on my way to better my time last year at Oceanside but just melted on the run between miles 2 and 3. Did a death walk until 5-1/2 trying not to faint and fall off the road along the way. Then I was finally able to start shuffling along at a trot. One thing I learned especially from this event was that getting hosed down feels real good at the time but wet socks and shoes kind of suck later on. Good luck to you in the full Vineman ! Neil

Neil–Thanks! It was great to meet you!! Good luck to Brian on his training.

That traffic was insane and it’s not usually that bad. Really!! It took us about that long too.

Good job Cathy! Good luck at Vineman, I hope it cools off for the race. I saw you around mile 5 of the run, but didn’t think you would remember me.
I will be doing the full Aquabike and will look for you on the course.
I hope your recovery is better than mine. I am still pretty stiff.
On the traffic- I have been racing at Vineman since '91. Yes, this year was the worst, but not a problem for me. I had to slow for a few seconds in 3 spots, but to be safe for me and others it was a small price to pay. It is a beautiful place to race and there is no way I want to piss off the locals that allow the race to happen.
I had the best race I could pull off after fighting a few injuries leading up to the race. Next Year I will be spectacular!
Karl

Thanks!!

Yeah, I’m still a little stiff today too. And about mile 5 of the run I was not happy at all in that sun.

See you in a couple weeks!
