Does anyone know anything about results? Ironmanlive is down…
As of right now I don’t see them posted. They said today that they would be posted sometime overnight and to just look in the morning. Actually they said to check at about 10:00 pm tonight but I’m about to fall asleep writing this so I’m gona wait til tomorrow:)
Here’s the correct link, it’s not on Ironman Live as far as I know.

I had a great day, shaved 23 minutes off my first time. Came in at 5:43:12. For only my second attempt at this distance, and in only my second year doing triathlon, I’m quite pleased.
Cheers,
Karma
Inside Triathlon.com has a short story and the top three men. According to many, the swim was long. I’m a first-timer, so all I can say is I had a good swim yet came out almost 4-5 minutes slower than expected. Overall, in my first 1/2 I broke 5 hours, barely, depsite the crippling leg cramps. I’m pretty disappointed because I was shooting for a sub-4:30. Live and learn.
What a great race, beautiful course, perfect weather…I finished before the sun broke and was actually cold for the first part of the bike. Russ, Dave and company do a great job and a big ‘thanks’ to all the wonderful volunteers.
I had a 42 minute PR on that course and a 31 minute 1/2 IM PR. The swim seemed normal to me, just a big current to swim against upriver (I was three minutes faster coming downriver.) Hot and sunny on the run for those of us who started in the last few waves (what’s new about that).

Good job Cathy
.
I finished in just before the fog broke. I guess that what I get for being a “baby” as some RD’s like to refer to my age group as.
To sum up, bad swim, decent bike, and bad run. If the swim was long that would explain me coming in 5 minutes slower than I thought I would. On the bike I almost wished I had warm arm warmers, it was wasn’t exactly warm. But after Wildflower I will take alittle chilly over overly hot. The run was screwed by GI problems, most likely stemming from lunch the day before, it was bothering me before the race. If I knew I was going to have GI problems one the run I would have left more out on the bike course. Overshot my goal time by 18 minutes. Cest la vie.
Absolutely great run race. The volunteers were really supportive and the race was well managed.
Result are up on the vineman.com site - in pdf format though. Looks like the swim splits are normal to me if you look at the top folks in each AG
"According to many, the swim was long. "
I plan on doing this race next year and I was wondering what it would be like to swim in the river i.e. the current (since last time I checked that river wasn’t .6 miles wide so I assumed you had to swim up river at some point…)
Did the race for the 5th time and didn’t notice the swim being long…my swim time was pretty consistent with years past but the current may have been a little stronger. Key to the swim is when against the current stay close to shore where it is weakest…when with the current stay in the middle where it is strongest. There will be a 2-3 minute difference between the out and back. Race is awesome and highly recommended though it has gotten much warmer in years past.
I would also guess that the course favors a stronger swimmer. For example, with a current against you, the efficient swimmers will have an advantage over a non-efficient swimmer and the non-efficient swimmer will use extra energy fighting the current. This is the case where I train with my OW swims - the faster guys gain more time when we head back with the current against us.
Thanks for all the kind words about the race! (of course we are getting our share of negative too) Hearing , i guess seeing, those words makes the limited sleep/rest the past few days and all the long days leading into the race worth it. We appreciate you all very much and do the best each year to make little changes for improvement. This year was quite tough managing contruction changes over the last couple weeks before the race. Our plan is to try and keep the finish back on the grass … we really like it there and it made for a great backdrop. It will likely make for great photos too!
Regarding the swim course distance; it is “spot on” marked with GPS. There are some tricks to a slightly faster swim split here … but i’ll save those for another day!
As for next year the rotation for swim waves will likely be alternating womens and mens waves. Therfore, most of you women will have earlier starts. Check the website next fall for details.
Rest up … Dave
Dave,
Could use your tip for a slightly faster swim time. Race the Vineman in 12 days. Always tried to do what the poster above suggested, ie. swim closer to shore heading upstream and into the channel coming down.
Of course getting behind a better swimmer always helps.
Will be the 5th time at the Full Vineman for me
thanks,
Conrad
PS. Two years ago there was similar controversy concerning the swim course being short. That year, I swam a :59:45 (normally around 1:05:00). Peter Kotland also had a fast swim, :48:00. Isn’t the course marked using the same fixed points on the shore? Year after year for both races?
The last 2 years (my first 2 working with the event) the courses have been measured with GPS. Kotlands 49 was definately a short course year. Also, there is a slight difference in the turn for the Full Vineman because of lap #2.
Regarding swimming tips: There is some truth to swimming against and with the current as mentioned above. The river does wind a bit and i always swam the tangents in the river instead of swimming the buoys. (the river does twist a little) Also … when sighting on the return leg i always used the bridge to sight off of instead of the buoys. Easy target, straight line back towards the finish or start lap #2. I sighted the right pillar on the bridge closest to the beach … you can actually see this from the turn. I belive this really helps!
See you in 2 weeks!
Dave
PR = Goodness.

Well, that would explain why I was one of the few swimming upstream near the buoys…damn. My watch must have played some tricks on me, but according to the ‘official’ splits, I was about where I thought on the swim…maybe a minute or two slow. Definitely use the bridge to spot, super easy to see. Can’t wait until next year.
in no particular order.

I was slow this year, but it was my first tri in 3.5 years (Great Floridian '00 was my last). No kidding. Transition skills and the arcane art of energy conservation are quickly lost to time, or so it was with me. Still, as always, it was a fun race with great support and terrific scenery.
-
I don’t know when the race stopped doing the expo/registration at Kendall Jackson (my last, again, was in '00). Still, I missed the old venue, so I drove there after dropping my run gear off to have a couple–well, okay, 4 (!) samples of vino.
-
Yes, the current was actually flowing this year. I also found myself running around the turn-around bouy. Shallower than years past, but flowing…hmmm.
-
My transition skills went to shit. Gotta work on that.
-
Boy my bike was dusty by the time I mounted her.
-
I said mounted.
-
It was cooler than years past. That was nice, particularly compared to what I remember (especially in the La Crema rows), but the bike made my toes numb. …Shoulda planned ahead and brought the toe covers.
-
Huge–and I mean HUGE–bike style points to everyone who raced on lugs, 7 speeds or less and/or downtube shifters. BEYOND HUGE POINTS to the cat on the Brooks Swallow saddle. Damn. Next year, I’m bringing my 9,000 pound Kogswell on principal alone. Tibbs–are you listening?! Get that Centurion tuned-up and let’s hammer Vineman next year on lugs and gnarly old-skool comps.
-
Disks are still cool. I don’t care if the individual rider rates them or not–they sound bad. Whoosh whoosh whoosh. Tibbsy, you NEED one.
-
I really really really want to meet up with the fuck-stain in the black pickup who nearly killed three guys on the big right-hand turn after Geyserville. Yes, jack-wad, I’m talking to you. I’d love to meet you in a bar, on the street, wherever. You are a tool, and you need to have your ass kicked. In fact, feel free to bring your mom, your dad and your dog, so that the fight will be fair for you, and so that I might clear the gene pool of your seed all at once. Dick.
-
Same goes for the casino bus driver.
-
Why did the turkey cross the road? …Hell if I know, but there were a whole bunch of them just after Chalk Hill.
-
To the dude on the 'Dale with three tubies lashed on the back but only two CO2 cartidges…uhm, I’m not a smart man, but I’m faily certain that math doesn’t work.
-
T2. Any way to re-engineer that one? Waaaaay too much time spent running on cleats.
-
Less than one mile into the run, and I’m yet again amused by the Californai Delusion of land baronship. Where did all those new homes come from? They weren’t there in '00. I shudder to think how much they cost (and, by the way, I own a piece of the delusion in Calsbad).
-
Oreos are yummy.
-
Women should always go first. Yes, I’m being pigish, but I like looking at them. Dudes in one-piece, see-through Orca tri-suits not so much…
-
Cool, that one short but steep hill comes earlier in the race. That’s good.
-
Cliff Shots give me heartburn. …And make me fart.
-
I said fart.
-
I didn’t witness too many wrecks or medical emergencies. That was good (last time I was at Wildflower, I saw some horrific ones).
-
The guy in the grape suit was cool.
-
The guy running barefoot was cooler.
-
Next year, if somebody can swim in circa-1985 jamms, ride on a lugged Bob Jackson/Mercian fixte and run barefoot in a grape suit, the Style Award For Life will be won.
-
I sure hope the last guy who came in (black and red outfit, and was immediately hustled to the med tent) did okay.
-
All you tri-whippets–for the love of Dr Atkins…drink more beer and eat more doughnuts. No kidding, if you’re on the cusp of winning a slot (and further empowering the WTC) go for it, otherwise, have that double machaca burrito with four Dos XXs. Common, now… It’s all good.
-
Finally, again, great race. Thanks Vineman people. You’re work continues to make a lot of people happy. And thanks to everyone who raced with a smile on their face. That’s cool. It’s only life, after all, and you’ve/we’ve got to remember to enjoy it every so often…

I’m just going to start calling you “PR” Morgan. What’s that, like 4 times this year?
Interesting comments about increased flow in the Russian River (notice is Russian as in the former Soviet country and not rushing). The flow should actually have been lower since during the week of the race, the Sonoma County Water Agency reduced the release rates from an upstream reservoir (Lake Mendocino) by about a third. They needed to save some water for spawning steelhead and salmon in the fall. In theory there should have been a little less current.
Overall the race went very well I though. My only suggestion was the lack of carpet on the T1 exit. My Speedplay cleats got so jammed up with dirt and/or rocks I had to run up the driveway and ride the first four miles un clipped while banging my right foot against the crank and pedal. Guys were riding by me looking at me like I was retarded and didn’t know how to pedal (which may be true). I thought the new finish area on the grass was great but guess the WHS baseball coach didn’t like it.
I agree the grape guy was cool. I heard he was conducting cutting edge research on aerodynamics of racing attire. Kinda like the dimples on golf balls and the Zipp disc.
Did you guys like the gun shot sounds coming from the vineyard near La Crema? People from out of the area though there was target practice going on but it was an automated system to scare birds away from the grapes. Congrats to everybody out there who made it! On a totally unrelated note, man there are a lot of hot looking tri women out there…what a great sport!!
Mike
Thanks all! And there has been a little revision on the numbers since I’ve looked at past results (44/33 minutes). Plus, only 3 PRs so far, but there are still a few races left. ;-0
