Video Compression--software recommendations

We have been taking a lot of videos of our son over the past year with our digital camera. The videos and decent quality and are sized at 640x420, and are usually 50mb to 100mb in size.

I need to find some software that will allow me to compress the .avi, so I can email some to the grandparents, etc…

I don’t use a Mac, which I know comes with everything you need and more, but I haven’t seen the errors of my ways and am using a Dell.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Doug

You probably won’t be able to compress it enough to ever email it. There are a couple of other options though. You could get a cheap hosting account at a place like ICDSoft and put the clips on the web so they can stream it from a url. All you need to do is copy the file out there and point your browser to it.

Another (much better) option would be just to burn them on dvds and send them (which is what I resorted to doing). I usually make one or two 20 minute videos a year for the grandparents. Take a look at adobe premier elements. That software will allow you to resize/optimize/edit video etc. You can also use it to cut and edit the videos and put them on a dvd that will work just like a dvd that you would rent. It is really cool software and the videos are much more entertaining than a bunch of unedited clips.

You can’t go wrong owning this software for the price. It is quite functional.

As stated before E-mailing is probably not an option unless you want to send a very short, 2-3 minutes and or very small resolution file.

As also stated public hosting is an option if your comfortable with other finding it,places like youtube, googlevideo etc.

Now day’s you can pick up a website of your own for very little 7-10 bucks a month plus annual domain registration which is like 25 bucks a year or cheaper. If you do this you can host your own videos, photo albums etc and make them available to only people you want.

As far as video editting LOTS of choices. I use **Pinnacle Studio **which will do some pretty amazing things. I actually got a unit that came with a capture card and extension block so you don’t have to plug anything into the back of the PC. All your connections, USB, FireWire, RCA etc are in the block that sits on your desk.

There are also TONS of options out there as far as “freeware”/“Shareware” for simply compressing and resizing video. Might just do a google and see what pops up.

Basically all depends on where your going and what you have planned.

Making yourown vids are really nice though. Anything from something as simple as a picture show set to music to near movie quality production…if your good, and have enough power.

Thanks. I’ll look into Pinnacle Systems.

It looks very promising.
